Some huge simplifications - Martin should add a big warning re make a test call first. People who follow this carefully are still not sure which particular tariffs with different providers/retailers will include 07744 (and 07755) calls and 08 calls.

t's good to see Martin has added other 07744 providers.

Now it should be possible to mention others without being subjected to personal abuse and accusations of spam from the proponents of a certain service if one happens to point out that not all providers have the same range of destinations.

For calling European mobiles, Simply-Fone have no coverage, but Planettalkfree and Yourcallworld have most of them. Planettalkfree even lists some from its 0870 number, though I haven't yet tried any in the evenings
  • 1.This bit in the article is misleading

"Other networks. Reports are that it's still fine for other networks. Obviously be vigilant, check your bills each month to ensure it hasn't started to charge."

Eg :3 do not allow you to call 07744/07755 numbers out of your x-network inclusive minutes.

2.Suggest this bit in using 18185 etc

"or if you have ‘off-peak free minutes’ it will be included"

be amended to read " or if you have landline minutes it will be included" and that your talking about the 020 number not the freephone one.

3.Suggest the links for 18185,1899,and 1866 go to the using from a mobile pages direct not to using it from the landline pages

    eg: http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php instead of https://www.18185.co.uk

4.Suggest that its made very clear that the 07744/07755 is not suitable for Payg Users.

5.Suggest that on O2 bit, that it advises that 0844 dial through numbers can also be used to make intl calls.(Plenty of suppliers of them).

Some interesting points - thank you for the feedback

    A few quick responses.
Some huge simplifications - Martin should add a big warning re make a test call first. People who follow this carefully are still not sure which particular tariffs with different providers/retailers will include 07744 (and 07755) calls and 08 calls.
This confuses me a little - as it's exactly whats in the article - right at the top of will it work it says
This system doesn’t work on all networks. Below I’ve listed each network’s policy, yet remember the networks don’t like you doing this, so things can change. To be safe, always make just a few short calls using this system in the first month, then check whether the access calls were free when you get the bill (or even quicker if you have online bill checking facilities).

Now onto Utility Brokers five points

    1. I will take a look at that and tweak - thank you.
    2. Most off-peak tariffs are landline only, but again its a useful clarification - happy to tweak
    3. I understand where you are going - though I think linking to the general service is more important. Existing users of these services should be able to find it ok - new users will need to see the whole service - so I will leave it as it is.
    4. I think this is an unnecesary overcomplication - the whole piece is predicated by
Do you have a contract mobile which includes cross network free minutes? In other words can you make calls to all mobiles and landlines within your free minute’s allocation?

·Yes. Read ‘how to make free calls
    ·No. Read ‘cutting your costs

I dont think there is a need to specify "it doesn't work for PAYG" as this more than makes sure of that.

    5. My worry is there will be confusion over other 084x tariffs - so to do it the way you suggest would involve explaining the difference whcih would add complexity and confusion - which i dont want to do. That's why I decided to keep it simple.

Thank you all for the very useful points.

    Hi Martin,

I agree with Utility Brokers point 3 so how about a compromise like mentioning in text after the 3 website links, "(please see individual respective mobile rates page for charges from mobiles)."

As we know MSE regulars would know straight away to go to this page but its newbies who may click on the normal 'rates' page as this is the first link (near top) that you see so newbies could easily click on this without reading the whole page.

    Apologies.

I should have actually read what you had written I guess, I just read the detail per network and not the introduction, noticed that you did not mention 3 nor all the other issues there are where people are on for example 'carphonewarehouse' vodafone and not 'vodafone' vodafone and thought there needs to be a warning. I'll look more carefully next time before I open my big mouth...

  • Is there an easy way of dialling both the international access number and the number you want from the phone's memory? I have problems accessing the number I want once I have dialled the access number, so I have to find a piece of paper to write down the number I want to call before I start. This seems rather stone-age, there must be an easier way. Perhaps I need a different phone?

Mike you can either open the phonebook automatically on answering the first number - append + to the end of the dialled number - or save the desired destination with both numbers separated by a pause character eg 07744.....p0032.... On a Nokia press * 3 times to get p; on other makes maybe hold down the same key or experiment.
  • This can be done as follows:

    On a Nokia phone
Step 1 Enter the access number
Step 2 Press 3 times to show ' p '. (This causes dialling to pause)
Step 3 Enter your destination number - including the full international code

    For example:
    07744 xxxxxx p 00972 XXXX XXXX

On a Siemens or Panasonic phone
Step 1 Enter the access number
Step 2 Press and hold 0 to show ' + '. (This causes dialling to pause)
Step 3 Enter your destination number - including the full international code

    For example:
    07744 xxxxxx 0 00972 XXXX XXXX

On a Motorola or Ericsson phone
Step 1 Enter the access number
Step 2 Press and hold to show ' p '. (This causes dialling to pause)
Step 3 Enter your destination number - including the full international code

    For example:
    07744 xxxxxx p 00972 XXXX XXXX
