Calls From Mobiles: How to do it fo free Article Discussion Area

This paragraph appears in Martin's updated article.
I use a Tesco Value SIM in my mobile to text France most days, or use Call Checker to speak from my landline to the mobile in question. Current best rate is 7p per min.

I]O2. It used to allow calls to 07744 numbers as part of the free minutes but has now stopped it. Yet the specialist providers have found a way round this by introducing 0870 access numbers instead, which are, uniquely free on O2. Thus the system works in exactly the same way, just with different access numbers, although currently only Simply-fone, Dial-abroad and You Call World offer it to 02 customers. [/I]
 I understand Tesco use O2.
Does this mean I can safely dial 0870, then 0033 plus the French mobile no. I want, and call free?
Again I seek help, not for the first time and thank anyone who can advise.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

zico, the answer is No. Your inclusive mins can only be used when you are in the UK.0

No you can't just dial the numbers 0870 you have to find a service that offers free international calls by dialing a number beginning 0870. Once you are connected to their service you dial the international number.ampersand wrote:I understand Tesco use O2.

The best way of checking if it's free is trial and error. i.e. try it for short call and check your bill.
I thought tesco was PAYG which tis whole system doesn't work for, but if you get inclusive minutes try it with a service that uses an 0870 xxxxxxxx number (if not free try a service with a 07744 xxxxxx number)

 If I've misunderstood you, sorry.0

            Thankyou stu369-
I erred in two respects: I have a normal Tesco SIM(not Value) and PAYG(don't use it enough to justify contract)
I currently use 0871 to access France, then the 00.33 etc.which gives landline to mobile calls @7p per minute, or 20p for texts(as said earlier)
Nerdish it may seem, but I incorporate the date alongside all my International Contact names when I check for price updates, usually weekly with the arrival of the newsletter. As Martin writes - they DO change and it's worth being sure that you have the best rate.
So, am I able to use a free call formula or not?
Many thanks, yet again.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

ampersand, why on earth should 0871 or indeed any other chargeable calls be free on pay-as-you-go? Check the tariff with Tesco.0

If I had your apparent technical nous, redux, I would not be asking.
I was intrigued by the original thread arising from Martin's article, which also includes:

If you read the thread carefully your see that the Free? Call, money saver idea does not work from Payg phones, only contracts with x-net minutes, therefore any calls to 0870 numbers will be charged at the appropriate ngn rate by Tesco Payg.Usually an arm and a leg!!!!The same applies to 0871 but they can be even dearer.
What you can do to save money all round is to nominate an 07744 number not 0870 as one of your best Friend numbers ,and get all the calls that dial through number reaches for 10p a minute.Including other UK Landlines.;)0

ampersand, no discourtesy was intended. But Martin's article does not say anything about free phone calls from pay-as-you-go, as mobilegossip has also pointed out without any intention to insult you.
The description free is being applied to mean no extra cost over inclusive minutes; in similar manner, once a contract phone has used these, the calls would be chargeable at the relevant tariff.

I have now bought 25m cable for landline(carboot sale £2.50)and take phone out to rocking seat under forsythia. We speak while I look out to night sky, gentle rains notwithstanding.

Just to clarify: I have an o2 contract with free calls. My brother in law lives in ireland and has an irish mobile. can i call him on this for free from my monthly calls allowance with this technique, and if so, which is the best provider to use.0
