    Hi

I always use sunflower seeds when making pesto because they are cheaper. Hope that helps.

Thanks soooo much for that...Have heaps of sunflower seeds that need using up that got yonks ago and was wondering how to use them up...:money:....Also I think pesto, pasta and veggies = quick cheap meal when don't feel like cooking :j. Does it freeze well? How long does it keep in the fridge?

Where does everyone get their tubs from to store dried stuff? charity shops or Mr A?

and I'm not getting my frozen peas tonight (in fact going to check recipe perhaps and see if I can use these fresh organic ones) because of the following..

Now baring in mind FF is open for me something crazy like 8-8 most days and like it's nearer than Asda (in fact just been there :)) it would perhaps make sense to compare some of the prices with smart price...

Anyhow best go and procrastinate before the great cycle (it's not that far really) to Mr A. Too hot to cook...might have pittas and salad...:)

and whilst I'm here can I ask another q...what is the volume of mayo made in the recipe for what cost...cos I can get a mid sized jar for something like 42p smart price and was wondering if it was cost effective?

If anyone wants pics of this ams loaves let me know :A

    Blessings and tx guys...

    Hugs

And almonds are also a very good substitute for pine nuts in pesto, as are walnuts, although walnuts do rather change the taste - nice if you like walnuts though :)

Pesto, however you make it, freezes fine - and it should keep at least a week in the fridge, could be longer (can't say for sure cos I've never tried for longer).

Tubs - Mr A for me, mostly because that's the shop that is most local, although for smaller amounts any recycled large screw-top jars are perfect.

Arty, we are bringing some stuff along, but what exactly this stuff will be depends on how much time/energy I have for cooking tomorow !

Poohbear, I believe it's meant to be a calzone each :)
  • I made the tomato and olive steam pudding for our tea and big thumbs up from us! I added a little extra water to the tomatoes in the pain initially with the lentils, but other than that followed all instructions! Worked a treat for us!

Yes it freezes fine :) I always freeze it in little circular tubs or ice cube trays so I can just get the right amount for a meal out. It keeps well in the fridge too, I think I've had it in there for about a week.

Bean curry and basmati rice tonight. I couldn't face cooking 400g of rice again, only to have to think of something to do with the leftovers, so I cut the rice to 350g (still a bit more than usual, but I wanted to see if it all got eaten). I don't know if it makes a difference to the finished result, but my mustard and garam masala are the same brand as in the shopping list, while my tomatoes, baked beans and kidney beans are all Waitrose's own brand. My rapeseed oil is Goldenfields brand, I'm using garlic puree rather than powder, and I can't remember what brand my chilli powder is, but it originally came in a red packet.

This was a very quick and easy mid-week dish. At first, I was a bit concerned about the high quantity of onions, but they mushed away quite nicely. Throwing three tins of stuff into the pan made me feel like a student again, some quarter of a century later! But the curry tastes good, and we all like it -- the words "delicious" and "very nice" were bandied about, along with "this is quite a lot like that baked bean thing you make" (from the daughter who won't eat baked beans in any other form but who likes baked bean and apple curry). Again, there seems to be an awful lot of food, but we seem to have worked our way through quite a lot of it perfectly happily, and people are keen to have the leftovers for lunch tomorrow ;-)

However, I'm beginning to wonder if my garam masala is getting a bit elderly, because it doesn't seem to taste of very much in the finished dish. I added another heaped teaspoonful just before the end of cooking, to compensate. In fact, have been wondering (more generally) about the use of garam masala in these recipes. A couple of Indian cookery books on my shelves say that garam masala should be added at the end of cooking, because it consists of aromatics which are lost if added at the start. The BBC Good Food site also says that "it's more usual to add it at the end, or to sprinkle it over food just before it's served": Do you think you would get more "bang for your buck" flavourwise if this recipe (and others like it) moved the garam masala addition to somewhere near the end, rather than frying it off with the onions? Just a thought. The extra garam masala that I added at the end of cooking made quite a difference to the finished dish.

Anyhow -- bean curry is a hit in this house, and something I can definitely see us making again.

Clean plates here tonight. The nut roast is as good as ever :)

Arty, I'm not sure about food at the weekend. I'd like to think I'll bring a lovely frugal picnic, but will probably end up buying a sandwich from M&S at the station! Are most people coming alone or bringing partners?

I finished off my garam masala making the carrot cake (well my own modified version of it) and didn't think it imparted much flavour. I then bought some new stuff and it was a totally different colour (loads darker) so I think age does make a difference. (I'd had mine since before I got married five years ago.)
