It almost did not happen. In fact, if it wasn't such a speedy, throw-it-all-together kind of meal, it would not have done, cos by the time I'd cleared up half a kilo of rice grains from all the nooks and crannies of the kitchen... Bloody flimsy Morrisons value rice packets ;)

Anyway :D Moving swiftly on, this is something we really did not enjoy all that much first time we had it, but it did seem like a dish with potential, so it was always on the cards that I would play about with it a bit tonight. Nothing too drastic, though, just adjusting the spices a bit, so where Kitty has

    half tsp chilli
    2 tsp mustard powder
    2 tsp garam masala

    we had

    2 tsp chilli
    2 tsp paprika
    2 tsp garam masala
    2 tsp coriander

This is for a full 4 portion sized dish, as it was easier to do it this way rather than faff about with half-empty tins and the like.

And we liked it :) With that amount of chilli, it was a madras-strength curry, which suited us fine, and replacing the mustard with paprika and coriander added a much-needed bit of depth. It was tasty, it was filling, and there's another meal's worth tucked away in the freezer, so we're happy :)

Good point about the garam masala, btw, Avocet - wonder if adding it at the end might work to an extent instead of my extra spices which Kitty's seasonings budget would not necessarily stretch to... ?

Anyway, here it is - curry for four:

And a single serving with rice:

And just because it happened to be on the card, my new kitchen pinboard:

10.30am is good for me. Better actually, as I can get a train an hour later (they only run one an hour). May actually be five or ten minutes after that, depending on connections.

I will be bringing some food, but not entirely sure what yet. Mr T usually has lots of YS sarnies on Friday evening!! It'll just be me, as DD is still with her Dad (& I have been very lazy with food prep for just me. :o)

I finished off my garam masala making the carrot cake (well my own modified version of it) and didn't think it imparted much flavour. I then bought some new stuff and it was a totally different colour (loads darker) so I think age does make a difference. (I'd had mine since before I got married five years ago.)

:D You're meant to use it up (and most spices, for that matter) within three months of opening to avoid loss of flavour. On the flip side, though, it won't go off, so if anyone's got lots of elderly spices to use, it's probably okay to chuck them all into whatever you are making and feel all virtuous for using it up rather than binning, cos it won't make much change to the taste :rotfl:

I think I'd be hard pushed to use my spices up that quickly although I think apart from the curry powder, I generally use them all within 6-12 months. (I do have curries - I just do my own mix each time I make one.)

Christine Hamilton has just served pig's head to Michelin starred chefs. Should Weezle get some stars?! Shows that frugal food can be first class! :D

Strong plain flour (1.5kg) on offer @ Weesel mart for 50p so got 2 packets...3/4 of panniers full (and they're 23l and 20l respectively so not small) for less than £9 inc erme stuff of squash, coffee and treat of mini rolls :j (well too tired to cook so they were officially tea)..

thanks so much even though this is early days and I'm probably wiser quitting the cigs than reducing the food budget anymore right now (pre CFR it was 10-15 a week inc extras like toilet roll)..

felt really good to have 2 full panniers for less than 9 :D...

and the peas were about 80p so got those 2..the only thing I had probs with was the balsamic...families would want to go for the kraft offer (2x250ml for £1.50) but I didn't think that was wise with limited storage..

I have some asafoetida that I bought about five years ago for a specific recipe and never used since. Still stinks as pungently as ever, though, which is why I haven't chucked it out - I figure it's got to still have some kick to it if it still smells like that !

Okay, so I've had a look at what ingredients of Kitty's look like they'll need using up sooner rather than later, and going from there, the three evening recipes I'd better go for next week are saag aloo, red pepper pasta and winter squash risotto. Not 100% sure which nights I'll do them - have to see what DD and I might be up to once she comes back from her grandparents - but it's likely to be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday again.

So, who's in for next week ?

I decided to double the calzone mixture. We made two loaves of bread and 8 calzones. The men all had one each and I have 3 to freeze. They made no comments about the lack of cheese but they all said they were tasty and very filling.
