Yeah with you there susan a 3 is not a good score for me. We rated it an 8/10 each and will do some tweaks the next time. Will look at the revised recipe and see if that seems better

    Hi all!!!

We had panzenella tonight. A few issues with it but not really. My main issue was the amount of bread needed, I halved the recipe as there is just me and mr arty but even half of the bread amount was nearly a whole loaf of bread. So I made the sauce and added the bread gradually untill it was all soaked up probably added about three quarters of my bread mountain.

However once I had made it we both thought it was yummy so opinions:

Mr arty- Was dubious about the bread salad (as he called it):rotfl: However, he gave it 8 out of 10. He thought the flavours were delish and imagines eating this meal on a terrace somewhere:). He thinks for us it would be better if we had used homemade bread but apart from that thought it was really yummy.

Me- I give this 9 out of 10 and it is currently joint top with pizza as my favourites of all the planner meals.:j However I love these sort of flavours so i think it was always going to be a winner. The only difference would be that I can spare more balsamic than Kitty so would probably throw some more in.

All in all a yummy dinner

Yes, Weezl said something like that before, too :) I guess we're just fussy little gets and a dinner has to put on a full techinicolour surround sound show on in order for us to score it particularly highly :rotfl:

Sadly, panzanella - even though this was its second outing and it went down well enough last time to earn a repeat performance tonight - has barely scored a 2 from !!!!!! tonight, which means that from now on I'll only have it as a lunch dish when I'm home on my own, or when we're skint and have lots of stale bread to use up ;)

What would be the lowest score to earn a dish a regular spot on your menu, Susan ?

Tonight's pasta funghi was a hit here. The only tweak I made was to make the stock with a teaspoon of Marmite as I didn't have the olive juice. This made it taste quite meaty with the mushrooms, which pleased DH. We thought it was about a 7 or 8 out of 10 and would definitely have it again. Funnily enough, I didn't think it too faffy, and only used one saucepan plus a frying pan and a pyrex dish. I cooked the pasta, then left it to drain in the colander while I re-used the pan to make the sauce. Then while it was all in the oven i gave the saucepan a quick rinse and used it again to cook the veg.
I took photos, but am on the wrong computer to post them at the moment.

No panzanella for me tonight - will probably do it tomorrow instead. Allegra and anyone else who made it: does the bread go soggy? Am wondering what sort of texture I'm aiming for.

It is a bit soggy, I suppose, but not unpleasantly so - and it depends on how fresh the bread is. I think that might be the reason that !!!!!! did not like it as much this time, now you've mentioned it Nuala - last time we used quite stale bread, which meant that after 10 mins soaking in the sauce it still had a bit of a crunch to it, like croutons I suppose. This time the bread was fresh though, and it went much softer.

Thanks Allegra ... I'll be using defrosted stale bread so I've no idea how that will turn out! I like the sound of it being crouton-y though!

  • Hey, I made the panzanella for dinner for myself and housie. She was a little bemused that it was the whole meal in itself and said she would find it hard not to eat something else with it, like some more salad leaves. It was tasty and I liked the flavour balance with the tomatoes and onion. I wouldnt have it before going on a hot date ;) lots of garlic. We had fresh basil in the garden which I tore up and put in, I like it. I might make it again if I were going to a bring and share and cut the bread smaller and add some other salad. I think it might be a little overwhelming to have it on its own.
I am enjoing all this simultaneous cooking malarkey :)

Still, I'm not complaining, it's all stuff that's 'free'. I spotted a tree on the roadside with some apples on today, I'll investigate that soon

I found plums today :) In fact, I found a lot of plums - will be going back for more tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after that.... :rotfl: Plus blackberries, of course - and sweet chestnuts that are much, much closer to me than the ones I picked from last year, and crabapples and sloes, ditto.

    I love where I live :)
