Likewise we cannot swap for olive oil (any type especially the much praised extra - virgin olive oil) as this too contains ALA. We also would not be able to cook with it since as a monounsaturated oil it will become toxic at lower temperatures than a PUFA.
I
Yes you have changed it and added something. Rapeseed oil is also classed as a monounsaturated oil so the same ould apply to the very oil you are currently using.
However, I'm not sure you are correct in this statement either.0 -
I'm sure you're right, and that you'd eat the right amount of it and not heat it etc.

i read that the smoke point of extra virgin was approx 100deg F lower than the smoke point of vegetable oil.
I'm like everyone just posting what I've read. I didn't add it to my post for any bad reason
I'm not sure what else i can say. I know you disagree with me, and that your ideal meal planner wouldn't contain vegetable oil. I've heard that now.

I read that using the amount of "vegetable oil" to get enough omega 3 might damage your eyesight.0

I have said I am looking into this and who I've contacted to help me with it. And that the planners would change if they needed to. I repeat that I have heard your ideal planner would not include the oil.
I hope that's satisfactory, I'm not sure what else I can do.

Weezl, I don't disagree with you over your plan and I wish you every success. I do however have doubts about using the amount of vegetable oil that you are to get enough ALA.
How do you feel about the veganhealth org recommendation? I was waiting you reply to post 1622 below because you seem to evade this particular issue.
sorry - didn't see last post.
It is not about 'my ideal planner' it is about a specific health problem that was highlighted on veganhealth org.0 -

ah right, ok, well I'll answer that and then everyone will be happy. I emailed the bristol achool of dietetics, (my friend who works there), and have asked for a summary of the findings on ALA and age-related macular degeneration, and specifically within a vegan population. I have pulled 12 further articles from medical and dietetics journals ready for further reading. I don't mean to evade the question, I felt i had said i am looking into it.
So the findings and recommendations of the veganhealth org did not convince you then? they have provided footnotes and the nurses study is one of the most repected studies.
which is what I suspected when you said
hiya maltesers, it's not that I didn't read the whole article, I did, I just am not seeing the need for vegans to supplement with DHA0 -

I am trying to follow this debate, though the technicalities are really not my thing.
Though I am not a fan of the government and its health information output, this is a mainstream plan, for the masses. It is billed as a healthy plan on a budget.
Given its main stream status, choosing current government guidelines as the basis for the plan is appropriate. These guidelines are accessable for all those who might choose to follow the plans.
There will always be other sources of information available, hundreds of them these days, and some of these sources will contain warnings about various food sources, with varying degrees of rigour.
It is not appropriate for the plans to change in response to these other sources constantly. Individual participants may feel strongly about individual reports and scares. It does not mean that the plans should change.
( the only variance to this would be a personal preference of Weezl's, it is, after all, her project)
I dont want to seem to ignore you Maltesers, goodness knows, the journey you have been on would send anyone on a mission to put only the healthiest things into their bodies. I just dont think the level of concern you have for your own diet is appropriate to apply to a mainstream plan.
The issue of AMD canbe adressed via a FAQ and anyone who feels they are concerned can make a different decision.
We also need to be careful that we dont restress people from whom we are supposed to be alleviating it. Stressing about food could cause more harm than anything we are stressing about.
HTHEat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.0
