thank you maltesers
I'm not wanting you to feel dismissed from debating with us.
it would be good if you wanted to pop up, on any topic of interest to you about CFR.
I've been reading a fair bit about conversion from ALA to DHA.
My understanding (largely based on this article: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/omega3 but am happy to give more refs if anyone is interested) is that the LOW conversion rate of ALA to DHA is where the body is preferentially converting omega 6 fats. This would explain why men have a lower conversion rate, since several studies suggest that males eat diets far higher in Omega 6 than their female counterparts, even when matched for other factors.
My feeling is that since the meal planners I've produced are much lower (but still sufficient in) omega 6, that our families using the planners in entirety won't be falling foul of this low conversion rate.
Further, I read that optimal conversion occurs when the diet meets the RDA of vitamins and minerals, which I also feel confident about.

Sami, that is a fab video
Weezl, your Meatloaf linkie, was very bad, but made me giggle :rotfl::T
I have been living out of the freezer, so this week have used up some bean curry, and a chickpea crumble, and a stirfry, with some whoopsied veg... mostly because I haven't really had the time to cook from scratch, or the money either.
Glad to see everyone is well0 -

Thankyou for that link it was very interesting.
I read the whole article which seems to say that the 3g a day of ALA necessary for conversion even with a low omega 6 intake is not worth the risk to eyesight when supplements are available.
In summary, it appears that 3 g (equivalent of about 1-1/2 teaspoons of flaxseed oil) per day of ALA cannot increase blood percentages of DHA in three months time, but can increase blood percentages in 10 months time, assuming intake of omega-6 is low.
The article continues to explain some problems with ALA including eyesight problems developing with only 1.26g perday. Canola oil may be implicated.
Summary of Omega-3 Benefits and Concerns
If it weren't for the (small chance) for potential eye problems, I would suggest either adding 3 g of ALA per day, or taking DHA supplements. Because of the eye issues, that much ALA is not worth the risk when DHA supplements are available. I would still recommend adding about .5 g of ALA per day for its own benefits on heart disease and to help increase EPA levels. If using such small amounts of uncooked, plant sources of ALA, the risk to the eyes should be very minimal.0 -
hiya maltesers, it's not that I didn't read the whole article, I did, I just am not seeing the need for vegans to supplement with DHA.
This is my logic, if Ala to dha conversion is likely to be poor, but everyone needs omega 3 as DHA to protect against coronary heart disease, then vegans would have a higher instance of the heart disease.
The studies I've read so far don't support this.
one example here: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/92/5/1040
I have no problem with continuing to debate this with you, and I like your approach.:) Both of what you bring and the way you bring it. I am concerned about 2 things though, detractors of the project may see our debate as you thinking something which you don't, also you may be hoping to ellicit a change in the CFR site which would be difficult for me to do with integrity.
Neither of these are your issue, they are mine/the projects, but I thought naming them would be important so we don't have a circular discussion, which I don't think either of us want.
Goodness only knows if the above makes sense! Please feel free to question it if I am beng unclear.

We launched on the 5th May, a shirl who has been faithfully following the planner with meat in has been having a roast chicken with trimmings every other weekend since May.
a newer shirl will be able to have the cfr roast chicken dinner, as more traditional, but the celebratory pork meal is a piece of variety for a stalwart shirl.
Does that help? Are you up for our cook-along at the weekend?
