I bought 6 bags of flour in ASDA yesterday but felt guilty for not nabbing more, lol! Also, they have 1 litre kilner-style jars for £1, so that was easier than trying to trek to IKEA obviously (and I think the IKEA looked smaller than 1L). I made my very first batch of chutney yesterday (apple) - though none of this is CFR news!
Yup, I think we plan on doing mockmas. Minus the brussel sprouts. Ours will be for dinner, wasn't there a question about that?
Sorry I'm incommunicado at the moment, still waiting on replacement internet box after ours died on Sunday. Just popped on for a few minutes while using McD's free wifi.

hiya maltesers, it's not that I didn't read the whole article, I did, I just am not seeing the need for vegans to supplement with DHA.
The vegan health org obviously does as that is what they are recommending.
The reason that was given is because several studies show people taking ALA had an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (
This is my logic, if Ala to dha conversion is likely to be poor, but everyone needs omega 3 as DHA to protect against coronary heart disease, then vegans would have a higher instance of the heart disease.
The statistics on CHD in South India would suggest that this is the case and the UK heart wards are also have so many that the main food is vegetarian curry.
On heart disease it says: A meta-analysis of five prospective studies of ALA intake published in 2004 (7) suggested that high ALA intake was associated with reduced risk of fatal heart disease (relative risk 0.79, .60-1.04). This finding was not quite statistically significant.
The studies I've read so far don't support this.
The one you mentioned does not mention CHD
Either way both eye problems and CHD are age related and not something most under 40's are overly concerned with,
Don't you feel people should have ALL the facts0 -

I do care about CHD and macular degeneration, and yes I think people need the facts. Myself included and I am still learning.
I have today emailed a GP a cardiac surgeon and a dietician. I have also pulled the lancet and several nutrition journals. I am not ignoring what you are bringing at all.
It would help me if you'd say what you'd like our debate to achieve. I'm not averse to having it but there have been several in the past (not with you) and I'm just keen that we don't become circular. Again I emphasise, not your fault, is the nature of a controversial project like this.

I was not happy with the introduction of the cheap vegetable oil to supply omega 3 as opposed to pilchards. The more research I have done the more problems associated with industrial oils largely to do with trans fats created in the industrial process of producing them. All industrial fats are heated to high temps. If vegans use oils they seem to stipulate cold pressed - to which I have no objection.
When you supplied the link to the veganheallthorg I was surprised to find yet another potential problem as the veganhealthorg had an issue with plant based ALA because of problems with eyesight.and recommended using DHA supplements and provided plenty of scholarly citations in journals to back it up. Apart from not recommending ALA for omaga 3 they also gave the following warning:
According to the Canola Council, canola oil should be safe for use in cooking. Based on the results of the above studies on eye lens damage, make sure you use low heat and limited cooking times when cooking with canola oil until more is known about ALA and eye damage.
You seem to disagree with their recommendation because of CHD which has got nothing to do with the issue which is eye damage.
It is great that Asda vegetable oil might provide enough ALA but not if it might endanger eyesight in the process.
I am sure many vegans use industrial rapeseed as asource of omega 3 and many pages can be found recommending it but as an important vegan health web site has given a warning perhaps it might be worth paying attention to it,
The price of many basic foods are rising at the moment and the target figure of £100 will be difficult to maintain anyway. would it be so awful to modify the diet so it costs a bit more to include some cheap pilchards or other source of omega 3?
However. you did say previously that changing the CFR site would be difficult for youto do with integrity. So I suppose this means no change regardless.0 -

no I don't disagree with this recommendation. I will look into a baked version of kitty's doughnuts as soon as is appropriate. As far as I uderstood the other cooking temperatures are not a problem.

no, that is not true historically of this project. I have never had a 'no change regardless" approach. The issue actually is that I continue to try to make changes to accomodate as many people's views and wishes as possible while the other core members of the team would rather I didn't, and often have asked me not to.
I was attempting to learn more about it and establish a compromise position, which is why I thought we were debating it.
