    makes 35-40
    250g wholemeal flour
    250g unsalted butter, slightly softened
    250g medium oatmeal
75g or 125g soft brown sugar depending on if you want digestives to go with cheese, or a sweet biscuit
    2 tsp fine sea salt
    2 tsps baking powder
    about 1 tblsp milk

rub fat and flour tog. add oatmeal, sugarm salt and baking powder. Add a few drops of milk until it all comes tog into a slightly sticky dough

dust with more flour, press into a 25cm disc. Chill for 30 mins to firm up

dust with flour, roll out until 3-4mm thick. Might need to dust with flour, or roll out between greaseproof. The mix is quite sticky and brittle

cut out 6-7cm shapes and use a spatula to trf to a baking sheet. Bake at 180C/Gas 4 for up to 10 mins, checking often after 5 mins. They should be golden brown around the edges and lightly coloured on top

leave to cool and firm up on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely

haven't tried this recipe as I would eat far too many straight off the rack, but it sure sounds good

    makes about 20
    150g medium oatmeal
    150g jumbo oats
    1/2 tsp fine sea salt
    a few twists blackpepper
small handful sunflower or other seeds (optional)
75ml extra virgin olive, rapeseed or hempseed oil

Mix all dry ingreds tog and make a well in the centre

pour the oil into the well, stir and then pour in just enough boiling water, about 150ml, to bind it into a firm dough

work quickly and don't worry if you over water a bit, you can add more oatmeal in if necessary

shape into a ball and rest it for a few mins.

roll out on a lightly floured surface, or between greaseproof sheets, until about 5mm thick. Cut out rounds of 6cm. You can re-roll the offcuts, but the more you work the mix, the more crumbly it becomes

bake at 180C/Gas 4 for 20 mins and cool on a wire rack

    keep in an airtight container

I'll be having a go at these, they sound lovely

    maltesers,

I have analysed the amount of ALA in both the planners now, and they are below the level which one of the studies based on the nurses study correlated with an increased risk of Age-related macular degeneration (1.44g/1.47g daily). The figures are available for those who would like them. There will also be an FAQ on the site addressing this shortly.

I am sorry but this not possible. Let me explain

option 1 planner has 2 X 3 ltr vegetable oil

so planner uses 5 - 6 ltrs of oil

Both USDA and Mccance give ALA at approx 9g/100g = 90g/ltr

    5 x 90g = 450

    divide by 4 people = 112.50

divide by 30 days = 3.75g ALA per day

Planner 2 only has 3ltr oil giving 2.25g ALA per day

Both well over the nurses study figure you have quoted.

Also you said that the added oil alone without including that used in cooking supplied enough ALA to produce omega 3 and your lower figure of 1.44 would not be enough.

So please do put up the figures
  • As a lurker I am beginning to find the continued level of questioning tedious.

Surely the simplest way for the issue to be resolved to your satisfaction is for you to supply the exact wording, measurements or quantities etc you would like to see incorporated on the site.

Thousands of people like me have found this site extremely helpful in numerous ways.

I just hope the good work on this site, especially the Christmas menus, will continue.
  • The simplest solution is to not make any health claims.

The site is superb and stunningly professional and the many testers have loved the recipes. Most people don't care it it is healthy or not and meets government guidelines - a true subsistence diet probably wouldn't be.

Weezl has said what she is doing to check it out and I think that is a prudent approach, better than accepting a guideline from one website without further investigation.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Lesley, I make oat cakes regularly and they are scrummy. I can't eat wheat so I make them for me and have adapted the recipe to make it cheaper. I use ready brek in it to increase vitamin levels in place of wheat flour in my recipe.

The recipe I use takes a long time and need to be watched and turned over so good to do while you are in the kitchen for something else.

We used to make digestive biscuits with the kids at school but I haven't tried to make them for years. Let me know how you get on if you do make them.

We have found we will be away from 27th-29th December so I am looking at adapting Christmas menus and shoppping to make allowances. We have been invited to a family wedding :D
