that does seem small. Hmmmn, okay *pondering*, when are you planning to make the pies? I'd be inclined for space reasons to only freeze the meat rather than meat plus pie. The pastry is quick to assemble, and if you bake rather than steam it you can have the whole thing ready in under an hour with time to do other things while it bakes.

Well the first one according to the planner is this sunday i can make it anytime, it rather depends i suppose on what you say about the chicken.. if it can freeze, then whenever really.

yup freezing once cooked is fine as long as you don't then refreeze and thaw it. The usual advice with chicken is then to allow to defrost in a fridge for 12 ish hrs as this will be a quarter of the bird, shredded, I think it should defrost fairly quickly.

    Hellooo Weezl

Just want to check something, with you saying this before:

was I right when I said this, about reheating something made with cooked chicken, after its initital cooking:
Just remember that whatever you make with the frozen, cooked chicken can't be safely reheated again once after you've cooked it - e.g. if you make a chicken pie with chicken from the freezer and you end up with leftover pie, you can't safely reheat it.

Have got a bit confused and want to be sure what I've said is correct, especially as it's in the single cooking advice article too! :o

hi venus, that sounds right to me :) On OS I think the mantra is one freeze and thaw to each state (RAW/cooked) ie you can freeze raw, defrost, cook, freeze and defrost, but that is the recommended max. Is that right?

  • I think that's right, have always been a bit scared of giving myself food poisoning, so the "you can only reheat cooked meat once" mantra has been stuck in my head, just got a bit confused over the other rules re freezing/defrosting/reheating stuff but you've summed it up nicely above, thank you m'dear!

I also made pumpkin risotto on Sunday :D
It was lovely.... the biddies loved it, and I have 2 portions in the freezer for Ron :D

Monday night I made up pumpkin and ricotta/cottage cheese cannelloni....
I havent tried this yet, as I froze 7 portions... but the biddies said it was fab :D

Yum! I had planned on a cannelloni for tonight as I have a packet that needs to be used very soon. I have spinach in the garden and cottage cheese in the fridge. It would make a change from the usual tomato based cannelloni. I have cooked all my pumpkin but I do have a squash.

DH has a sore mouth/tooth problem so I need something not too chewy.

    OK confession time...

I roasted the chicken, put half a lemon inside it along with an half an onion and a bit of salt and pepper spread over. Now this being the first time i have ever cooked a whole roast chicken at 38 years of age (should i have admitted that or not) :) in the oven i was suprised how it came out. My ex girlfriends cooking never tasted like this :). It was wonderfully brown and crackling away when i took it from the oven, although how the smoke alarms never went off i'll never know:rotfl:. I calved a bit for my son to try and i tried it to an OMG it was yummy, so much so we ate about 1/3 of it there and then..pmsl. We forgot for a few minutes that we were also preparing pizza :). Anyway i got as much meat off the chicken as i could, spread some on the pizza and split what was left into 2 containers and stuck them into the freezer.

Somehow i must have got my quantities wrong as i used 2 tins of tomatoes to make the equivalent of 3 pizzas but after rolling the base out etc i only made 2 and to be quite honest there was still loads leftover. So tomorrow i said to my son that we will use this leftover sauce with some pasta for dinnner.

    Hi Orville,

when I did the option one month I also had very limited fridge/freezer space as I was sharing a house at the time. What I did was plan, plan and plan. Its boring but I just didnt have the freezer room to do everything at once. Luckily the CFR team are very good at adapting and so I would freeze chicken alone and make pastry on the day, maybe have two portions back to back rather than once a week and only buy exactly what i needed.
