. No doubt they will ask the EU to intervene and prevent the transfers to Scottish Branches. .

That's ridiculous. The only way the EU could do that is to insist that RBS restrict accounts at Scottish Branches to people who live in Scotland only, which would be a restriction on free trade and consumer choice. People would only close their ex RBS/new Santander accounts anyway and move to Barclays or HSBC etc instead. Even the EU can't make people bank with Santander if they don't want to.

Part of the agreement for Santander to buy the RBS English branches is that the final price depends on how many customers they get when the transfer finally goes through next year. If a lot of customers have moved their accounts, they simply pay a lower price. If the final number of customers transferred to Santander is insufficient to placate the competition authorities, they will simply impose further penalties on RBS.

My friend opened a new account up today with rbs online (only took 2 mins as they have all my previous details)

they did it based at a glasgow city centre branch

Will then have the various credits transfered over the next month or so.

So your friend opened an account with your details?

Was it for them or you? Was it your friend or you? Are you two people?

    Agh sorry ! My Bad

I have a very good friend who cant really manage her finances if her bills are not paid by me (ie she wouldnt pay them on time, because cant be bothered waiting on phone etc to pay rent/council tax etc) (doesnt use DD's because paid 4 weekly and she is crap at keeping money in)

So basically do all the bills etc when she gets paid.

Advised of her of rbs sale and how rubbish santander are. So we went through application for a new KEY account at the glasgow city branch (just picked one at random)

Hope that clears that up for you:)

This morning I've received a letter regarding the account I've opened at the Oban Branch. It's just a request for a signature and then it'll be open

I'm still going to open it rather than wiat for them to move my other account to a Scottish Branch

I haven't been into my branch in something like 20 years. If I needed to go in one I could go to a Natwest branch. So I'm moving my account to the Outer Hebrides!!

Just spoke to the helpline and they think you can choose the branch in Scotland that you transfer your account to. Sounds simple. They send you a transfer form. When you send it back they send an acknowledgement letter. You then stay with your current branch until the day comes and then bingo, you are transferred!

To the person who asked about ONE accounts - they are NOT included in the sale. Check out the FAQs online.

I've just received the form to transfer my account.

It's a simple one page form where you enter your account details and the name of the Scottish branch that you wish to transfer to.

I simply used the branch locator on the RBS website :
    rbs.co.uk/microsites/general/branch_locator/step1.asp

Selected my preferred branch and sent off the form.

    Simple 5 minute job.

Note, the form does say that transfer instructions will not be processed immediately but they will acknowledge receipt of the instruction and then will confirm in due course when the account will move.

This is much better than opening an account myself and then having to arrange new Direct Debits, Standing Orders and Salary payments etc...

    Thanks Machair,

There is a sort code checker on the RBS website and you are correct ONE accounts will not be affected.
I have a book in work that lists all the bank sortcode's in the UK. I think that the Norwich sortcode that deals with ONE accounts is also a processing centre, hence the reason for the exclusion.

Am I right in thinking santander is spanish? And the next country on the hit parade of wobbliest economies most likely to fall over is Spain? So, will we be seeing a bail out of a spanish bank to protect English & welsh jobs and customers in the near future? I'm off for a wee lie down.

The march of Santander goes on. They may well manage to buy up everything in their path but they do not have a clue how to run the operations when they get them.

I have been with RBS for 23 years and the few products I had with Santander (mortgage & cc) I moved over to RBS as had no end of problems with Santander and now I read that all my accounts will be just given to Santander, NO WAY.

Beyond me how they are allowed to buy up so much and doubt this will be the end of their spending spree. As others have said how is this offering customers more choice?
