Yesterday I applied online to open a RBS current account based at a Scottish branch- the process was very easy.
They even agreed to give me an overdraft of £15000
So much for the credit cruch :shocked:God save the King!

I also have an account with a sort code starting with 83
However, when I spoke to RBS on their contact number : 0800 210 0214
I was informed that since my other RBS main account was held at a branch that was effected by the transfer, then this "83" account would also be transferred.
I was also informed that RBS are not allowed to publish the fact that customers can remain with the RBS Group if they transfer their account to an RBS Scottish branch. (It's against European rules or something)
They are sending me a form so that I can transfer my accounts to a Scottish branch, but this transfer process could take several months to complete, so everyone needs to be aware that they should start that process soon, or they may be too late !This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I've had a letter from RBS this morning. It basically mirrors the FAQ's on the website.
I will give them a ring later on to clarify a few things0 -

I am more inclined to believe something if I see it in writing rather than someone tells me something is the case. Everything I have read from RBS suggests if an account is held at a RBS branch in Scotland it will not move to Santander, if an account is held at a branch in England or Wales it will transfer. Whether or not an account is a main account is a red herring.
I hazzard a guess the person to whom you spoke was trying to dissuade customers from opening/transfering an account to a Scottish branch probably making it up as they go along.

If only 5% of RBS customers decide to transfer out over the next few months that is at least 100,000 accounts. I doubt that even RBS customer services could handle the volume without a problem. However if there are glitches it will be the Santander name that once again gets tarnished whether they like it or not. As Santander won't have any infuences over the branches for a good few months all they can do is stand on the side lines and watch their potential customers dissappear North. No doubt they will ask the EU to intervene and prevent the transfers to Scottish Branches. I am moving quick just in case - I remember Northern Rock too well - once the stampede starts its uncontrollable.0

Interesting Article on London Satndard Website: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-business/article-23864339-santander-faces-extra-pound-180m-bill-from-rbs-branch-buy.do
Uswitch suggest RBS customers switch to Santander now and take the £100 bonus. Makes sense if you are going to stay with them anyway.0 -
Just to confirm, RBS customers can switch their accounts from branches in England and Wales to a branch in Scotland. You do not have to open up a new account to do this.
All you have to do is ring 0800 2100214, tell them you do not want to transfer to Santander, and they will be able to send you a 'switching form' which will switch your account from your English/Welsh branch to a branch in Scotland.
Obviously they can't really advertise this, but if we can spread the word, this will become widely known and people won't have to deal with Santander if they don't want to! :j0 -
For what it's worth, this is my plan:
1. When I'm next in Edinburgh (in 3 weeks) go into the Bruntsfield RBS and open 1 current account and 1 direct saver account.
2. Gradually transfer all credits (salary, etc.) and direct debits to the newly opened Bruntsfield accounts, leaving the English RBS accounts with nil in them and no activity (but still open).
3. Only close the English RBS accounts when the sale to Santander has gone through.
Benefits - accounts already up and running from Bruntsfield, also the open English accounts will still count in the Santander purchase price (only 4 but every one will count!)
Down side - Until I close them Santander will have access to my details from the still open English accounts. But at least there will be no direct debits for them to mess up.
What do people think to this?
(btw I'm a long standing RBS shareholder who lost tens of thousands when the share price crashed :-()

You don't need to go to Scotland to open one.
Assuming you use online banking you can do so from the comfort of your own settee via online banking.0 -
