How much would a re spray cost?

You would be mad to notify your insurer for a small ding like this (although technically you should) try and get it sorted privately with the other party.
Anything upto £200 will be OK after that he is taking the mick (assuming damage is as you describe).0 -
Kimberley, this older chap may well be a decent sort there are still some of us about.
If he gets a reasonable quote and has his car repaired just pay him the lolly and keep schtum, it's a scrape in a forecourt for pete's sake you didn't ram him up the back at 60 mph outside a school whilst eating a pizza, smoking a fag, drinking a cup of tea and (criminaly insane) talking on a mobile phone at the same time.
We've all had little bumps and scrapes like this especially in our formative driving days, it's no big deal.
You sound OK, regardless of where he was parked you've not tried to blame him or wheedle out of your responsibilities, good on you, i hope he plays the game with you.0 -
I didn't no but he was an elderly gentleman so hopefully won't try it on. I didn't have a camera with me but will ensure I carry one in future. It's a learning experience I guess. You learn by your mistakes.
Tip - Always carry a camera or even just a camera phone around with you

I will in future, thanks. Just an update. I phoned my Insurance company up this morning and they said if I want to sort the repair out myself without involving them then thats fine, so thats good news as long as I have the amount the bill comes to. If it comes to more then I can afford then they said just contact them again but it just means that my next years premiums will cost a little more. They said that there is no need to inform them if I can settle in private in future. I only contact them if I need to settle through my policy.0 -
You should maybe consider advanced driving lessons as going around hitting stationary cars isn't a good thing.
It might also get you future insurance discounts.0 -

I'd have thought "not hitting stationary cars" was pretty high up on the list in the standard driving test.

Buy a few disposables, only a few pounds. If a serious accident, digital may not be considered admissable. Plus, if your car gets broken into, it's better losing a 1.99 Sainsbury's best than a £199 digi.0 -
This would seem to be more appropriate;

Yep, but you still need to notify when you renew/get quotes for next years insurance0
