I got my DLA result this morning and it makes no sense at all. It says I'm a danger to myself and then goes on to say I'm not. Which I've taken as "we haven't got a clue". And they still haven't taken into account all my conditions - they've decided that because the average visually impaired person has no problems with going toilet, I shouldn't either - I have IBS too.

Par for the course, I'm afraid. Despite having had approx 5 falls in the last 2 years resulting in various injuries such as broken elbow, broken wrist etc, I am in no danger of falling. Go figure.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

Yet I, who fall less regularly than most in a similar situation (and rarely cause severe injury needing immediate medical attention), am acknowledged to need care as I am 'at risk of falling' but due to my long running mental health problems including severe self harm and a suicide attempt I am also considered at risk of harming myself and neglecting myself which I think is why I get mid rate care rather than low, I could be wrong though.

These things are just unfathomable sometimes, especially considering I have been awarded high rate mobility for DLA and am having to go to appeal for ESA as I scored 0 points in the 'medical' assessment. I know they are different but I have been told by my appeal case worker that the conditions for meeting high rate mobility are far stricter than ESA equivalent and as such I should have automatically scored 15 points and qualified for the benefit. :rotfl:

Sometimes if you don't laugh you'll cry.
  • fp It's a ridiculous situation isn't it. I am dreading the migration to ESA.
I was denied both care and mobility in a recent application for DLA. It had taken me almost 5 years to get up the courage to apply. My application was supported by Social Services, GP and Consultant but no dice.

It is a horribly stressful and upsetting process and I dread to think what it's like for those who don't have the mental acuity and verbal skills we have.

    Good luck with your Appeal.

    Thanks.

If you can appeal without damaging your health further then I would urge you to, and get in contact with either a charity that is specific to your condition or CAB, it really helped me to relax as it is very obvious that my case worker knows exactly what she is doing.

I got the news from ESA two weeks before my DLA decision, in those two weeks the anxiety of having no income and the not knowing the procedures really took me backwards but as soon as i got my DLA and knew I could pay the bills things got a ton better. Now i am not particularly worried about my appeal at all because I have the right backing and evidence, I'm sure I'll be bricking it on the day but by the sounds of it that could be over a year so things could be a LOT worse.

Funnily enough i got my ESA points score letter (they send it separate to the actual decision letter) in the same days mail as my DLA one and just happened to open that first, never have i gone from such rage to shear delight in my entire life!

the rules for ESA are very diffrent than for DLA and they are getting even harder for people with mobility problems come March when "vertual wheelchairs" come into play, I cant walk at all and that should mean an automatic pass for ESA but not when the rules change when the HCP can decide that you could manage if you had a vertual wheelchair :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

From what Ive read yes, it the daftest idea on the planet.

I should be ok because I cant self propel so I will still get enough points on just one question but as someone who used to walk with crutches, then used a wheelchair part time, to full time wheelchair user to powerchair user it makes no sense to me, the fact is Ive been unable to walk unaided for nearly 20 years and by assuming a virtual wheelchair for mobility impaired people to refuse sickness beneifts is rediculous.

Someone hasn't thought that through at all.

  • I can't self propel either, but I'm not sure how I could prove that. More joys :(
