UK carriers response to Apples iphone 4 refund announcement

Hi I am a little confused about what UK carriers are going to allow unhappy iphone 4 customers to do in the UK - do we get 30 days too? Will we be able to break our contracts here?

I thought it would be useful if people could post their experiences in one post so that we can all stick together and be informed together.

I'm particularly interested in any Tesco response but I know others will want to know about O2, Orange, Vodafone etc

Thanks

Jobs didn't state at the press conference that the 30-day offer was only applicable to the USA so I don't see how UK networks can even think about not adhering to what he said. By my reckoning, however, anyone who got their phone on launch day only has till Saturday to return it, so they'd best be quick if that's what they want to do.

The phone and contract are separate. So i am unsure how it will work, the phone is obviously faulty, and apple admit it. The phone has to be replaced/refunded under SOGA. Since nothing can match the IPhone 4 at the moment, they have no choice but to offer a refund.

Difficulty is, will it apply to the contract as the contract does subsides the phone cost!

That is debatable, however as they cannot offer you an iPhone 4 that doesnt suffer from this design fault you should be able to claim a refund like you say.

True, there are other smartphones. But IPhone has such hype about it like the IPods. Sure other MP3 players can match the spec, but its still not an IPod. Replacement devices most likely would not be accepted.

I would say at a guess the operators will let you out on return of the handset (if so get a collection receipt from courier/send by special delivery, and confirm its safe arrival), otherwise they know people will leave when a fixed IPhone is available on the market.

O2 updated their site at 17:00 to say they are "still talking" to Apple and will release a further update on Wednesday. That'll leave just three days for people who received their iPhone 4 on launch day to return the handset if they so wish. Not that I'm trying to imply that O2 may be stalling on the iissue, of course.

This is from a third party (but taken from Voda's eForum) so I can't promise that it is their final word on the matter...

With any phone that we supply, you do get a 7 day piece (sic) of mind policy to change or cancel that contract.

If you have gone past the 7 days this option is not available.

If you think that there is a fault with that particular handset you can get a replacement within the first 28 days.

If you have any further questions please let us know.

Well now this is useful, and whats the point in another dud? UK Carriers are the absolute worst for digging heals in, Apple have said to refund, AT&T will you can be sure of that, I don't have an iPhone 4 but I would pursue this as far as I could on principle alone.
  • I'm currently trying to return an iPhone 4 to Tesco and having no joy. They are saying their return policy is 14 days regardless of any announcement from Apple.

I'm outside of the 14 days but within 30 days (for now). Anyone who has managed to return their phone in the UK, especially with Tesco, I would be very interested to hear how you did it.

If I return it as faulty Tesco said they would simply replace it, I would then return that also. Tesco also said their policy for returns is 28 days from the initial purchase, so they would essentially run down the clock replacing it until 28 days was over. Not great service!
