I've seen some outdated quotes from old Highway Codes before, but that one is from the 1994 edition!
1994 seems recent to me.But I have been on the road for nearly 30 years.I"m getting old!.
Whatever the law says, driving on hatched areas never feels right or safe.Road markings are there for a good reason.Your safety.(Now I"m sounding old!).If you cross chevrons to overtake me, expect a stern glare.

I positively HATE vigilante drivers who force their own made up highway code onto other drivers!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cuecU3Mqno

It's amazing how many clueless morons there are out there......

I have just watched the video. The cars were making good progress, why overtake?.It seemed pointlessly pushy. The video also shows the driver breaking the two second rule. The driver with his arm out of the window was reacting to the poor driving of the car with the camera.

It"s amazing how many self appointed perfect drivers there are out there...

The actual reason for cross hatchings is to separate opposing streams of traffic by a larger margin than they would otherwise be separated. In the absence of oncoming traffic, there is no longer any safety concern.

Glare if you want to.. I'll simply smile back :)

Seemed totally pointless to overtake, traffic flowing at a good speed, cars visible in the distance so they'll just be hopping in and out without geting anywhere really, a lot of keep left signs in the road, and a lot of traffic the other way.
Then complaing about the car in front while tailgaiting him himself trying to get past.
It's a shame how "perfect" drivers always feel the need to complain about others.
Maybe this wasn't the best video to put on YouTube.

    Is this you as well?

You see a dual carriageway, pull into the second lane, then drive the entire length on the right with no traffic at all on your left!
No wonder you get people p*ssed off with you.
If you're not overtaking, pull back in.

Driver you're complaining about did exactly what you did, waited for the hatching, with broken lines and passed you, after you drove all the way down the dual carriageway on the right with it totally clear on the left of you again. Can't really see why you're complaining. On the island earlier you're in the wrong lane for Worcs, then swerve across the cross hatchings on the exit at the last minute, what happened to the car on the left of you there?

It's probably not a good idea to publish videos until you actually start driving a bit better yourself.

image 1, should be a broken white line like shown but the other side should be two broken lines I think. Number 2 is O.K under new regs but very uncommon.

I guess they're a bit slower to update the road markings where I drive.

I've only ever seen double whites at the edge of a hatched area on very new markings.

lol bunch of pricks, so im supposed to cut up the cars im overtaking in order to allow pushy !!!! behind me to overtake? or... break the speed limit to overtake sooner?
I think i'll carry on as I am, thx

And FYI in the video with the idiot in the Focus, the traffic was travelling at 38 mph.... In a national speed limit road this is NOT ACCEPTABLE!!
Most if not all the accident on that road occur because of excessively slow drivers.

Oh and I was in the correct lane!!

The car next to me was going to Droitwich IN THE LANE FOR DROITWICH!!

Well on your video, at 1.14 you're in the lane for K'ST.... somewhere, as you've drifted right out of the WORCS lane you've been in most of the time, it's clearly marked on the left, then at the last minute you cut over the markings and straight off the island from the right hand lane.
You still need to get out of the right lane if the lefts clear on dual carriageways faster as well.
    Camera doesn't lie remember.

For safety, when overtaking on a dual carriageway and especially on a motorway you shouldn't pull in until you can see that vehicle is fully inside in your rear view mirror.... As taught by the institute of advanced motorists.
And eh I don't see any issue in riding over chevrons LEGALLY in order to make smooth progress....
