Overtaking on cross hatchings

This evening I was driving home along a country NSL/50mph A road, which for about 3 miles, maybe more, contains effectively a 3rd lane down the middle with cross hatchings on it. At first there is a double white line which alternates sides, then towards the end for a good mile or so it is broken white lines on both sides. I was at the back of a queue of traffic moving a bit slower than I would have liked, so I overtook on this hatched lane, first a van that was doing about 35-40, then about 5 cars travelling a bit faster. Towards the end of this section, it goes down to a 40 limit and a central reservation appears, so when I saw this I pulled back in (I knew it was there, and pulled back in in plenty of time; wasn't like I was pulling in sharply to avoid killing myself on the central res or anything). Anyway - guy whom I pulled in in front of starts some serious tailgating and flashing his lights at me, before turning off the road a few hundred yards later, and I could tell the other cars didn't like it. Either,
1. They thought the manouevre was unsafe (not really IMO)
2. They believed mistakenly that it was illegal to overtake on the hatchings.
3. They didn't like my 11 year old Hyundai overtaking their flashy cars.

I suspect a combination of 2 and 3. Why do people believe never overtake on these cross hatchings? The first time I went on this road I went home afterwards and researched whether this manouevre was illegal and concluded that it was not. So why did everyone get annoyed with me exactly?!

This was meant to be more of a rant but I've calmed down a bit too much since I got home! :P
Your opinions, please, good people.

Solid line = You must not enter. By law.
Broken line = Highway Code says you should not enter but there is no law against it.

As you rightly state it's perfectly legal, however most drivers haven't read the Highway Code since they passed their test and probably didn't understand the different in meaning between "must" and "should" in the damn thing anyway.

Oh and overtaking people in a car that's generally perceived as slow and crap is hilarious. I used to do the same in my old Volvo 940 turbo.

It is illegal to drive on the hatching when overtaking
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

No it isn't, unless it is bordered by a solid line. The OP clearly stated that this was a broken line.

Road markings shown in diagrams 1013.1, 1013.3 and 1013.4: double white lines

    26. – (1) A road marking for conveying the requirements specified in paragraph (2) and the warning specified in paragraph (7) shall be of the size, colour and type shown in diagram 1013.1, 1013.3 or 1013.4.
    (2) The requirements conveyed by a road marking mentioned in paragraph (1) shall be that -
    (a) subject to paragraphs (3) and (5), no vehicle shall stop on any length of road along which the marking has been placed at any point between the ends of the marking; and
    (b) subject to paragraph (6), every vehicle proceeding on any length of road along which the marking has been so placed that, as viewed in the direction of travel of the vehicle, a continuous line is on the left of a broken line or of another continuous line, shall be so driven as to keep the first-mentioned continuous line on the right hand or off side of the vehicle.
    (3) Nothing in paragraph (2)(a) shall apply so as to prevent a vehicle stopping on any length of road so long as may be necessary for any of the purposes specified in paragraph (4) if the vehicle cannot be used for such a purpose without stopping on the length of road.

Paragraph 4 is just about dropping off passengers and stuff.

It's not illegal, the guy who hit me whilst I was overtaking him on chevrons was done for driving without due care.

Thank you for that. My thoughts entirely. Actually I read when I looked this up that it said something like 'you should not enter unless it is necessary.' Erm, I want to overtake, therefore it's necessary.

Yes, my point exactly. I waited until the broken lines to overtake.

Chevrons are different. Chevrons are the arrow shaped ones by motorway slip roads and its illegal to enter/cross those. Do you mean hatchings?

"Necessary" is a word that is so open to interpretation it is meaningless, and besides the Highway Code is not a book of law, except for the rules that cite chapter and verse of some law.

Yes there is the disclaimer that if you violate the guidelines that can be used against you if some other incident occurs, such as an accident leading to a civil claim.

In this form of overtaking the only time that's likely to bite you is the situation where you have a large central hatched area and further ahead it turns into a right turn lane. If you find yourself alongside someone else when it turns into the right turn area, and then they drive into the side of you then it will be your fault for being there. Overtake faster next time :)

Only when bordered by solid lines, i.e. not the situation the OP described.

Cross Hatchings spliting 2 carriageways running in different directions on an a road.

What made my insurance claim messy was the junction the other driver claimed to be about to turn into on the right... He claimed not to notice the car alongside as he swung into it
