Freezing Milk

  • I 2nd everything the above posters have said. I have been freezing milk for years. It makes absolutely NO difference to the taste or quality. I get through a lot of milk as DS3 is one and I bulk buy it in the weekly shop, freeze it and defrost overnight as required.

DO make sure you dont pack it in you freezer because it DOES expands, as previously stated and the yellow colour is a bit "ugh" looking but once defrosted it is as if you'd bought it that day.

Go ahead, stock up and save yourself some pennies!! Ive read somewhere on the forums that freezers work more efficently when full, so it's win, win all round!!!

  • Sorry Penny, i didn't see it
  • I'm sure this has been done before, and I'm sorry for asking again :o, but when freezing milk is there anything I should be aware of? Like do I need to open the carton to allow the milk to expand? Pour it into different containers? Where do I defrost it? Does it affect the taste?

Again - sorry for asking what is probably a repeat, but we got caught out by the snow and had no milk this week. My DS is only just a year old, and while he's still breastfed, I need milk for making his porridge etc.

Just stick the unopened bottles in the freezer. Defrost in the sink overnight.

One thing I did find when I used to do this regularly was that if I froze the plastic milk bottles, when it came to de-frosting it again, it was a good idea to stand the bottle in a large saucepan, as they tended to leak, so the leakage could be caught and poured back into the bottle, rather than losing it. The bottles didn't usually split, the leakage seemed to seep from the seal. Hope this tip helps.
