Freezing Milk

  • hi, i have started to buy full fat milk instead of semi-skimmed, its the same price in most shops. i then empty half out into a jug and fill the bottle up with really cold water. i have 4 kids and not one of them have noticed the difference in the last week. i reckon i will save £4.25 a week at least by doing this, i also freeze the "pure" milk in the six pinter bottle and that is actually 12 pints when defrosted and diluted with really cold water. i have milk bulging out of the fridge and freezer at the moment so i dont need to buy any next week.
  • I usually go through a 4 pint bottle of milk before it goes off but I'd started drinking less, so I bought two 2 pint bottles and put one in the freezer - I assumed it'd be fine because my mum always has a spare frozen bottle of milk in the freezer.

However when I took it out (it was the Sainsburys farm promise this is not organic but we give money to organic farmers one) I noticed the label didn't say it was suitable for freezing. The bottle hasn't split so I guess it's alright, but it has expanded so it's all round and the bottom isn't flat so it won't stand up any more! Also, I left it overnight in the fridge but it is still so frozen I can't even get one drop out :(

I have put it on the work surface in a jug of hottish water now in the hope of getting something useable! Luckily I have got the other 2 pint bottle to transfer the milk into if the bottom doesn't flatten out.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

This is quite normal ;) Water is unusual in that it expands as it freezes (most liquids shrink) so the bottle distorts slightly. As it thaws the milk will shrink to its original volume.

  • Milk in the waxed cartons will freeze just as well as milk in plastic polypots. They will expand as well, just as Penelope Penguin has described above
  • Not very money-saving, but if you're in a hurry you can defrost the milk in the microwave - I do that sometimes.

    Hi taxi,

Yes you can. There's a long thread on freezing milk that may help so I've added your post to it to keep the replies together.

I freeze mine in cartons and it is fine, but allow enough time for it to defrost.
  • I have an unopened two litre carton of semi skimmed milk with a use by date of tomorrow on it.
Really annoyed with myself as I don't think it is going to get used and I don't want to throw it out.
I've never frozen milk before and wondered whether it was not too late to freeze this, and would I be able to separate it into four half litre portions or whether it really needs to be frozen in the original container.
    Thanks everyone!
  • I often buy reduced milk and freeze it (usually in 1 pints as they are quicker to defrost overnight). HTH. And yes, you can split it.
