What a busy evening yesterday was. Ran 6miles on an interval training run and although it was hard going I'm pleased I did it as its 5mths since I last ran this far. Felt like I was running on empty a bit - hence why it was hard work at times.

Shorter run on Wed and then longer run on Friday and middle run on Sunday - that's the plan!

Hope you are all enjoying your summer running, and that those returning from injury are taking it steadily.

CW18 - how did your run go at the weekend?

Skinty - I so relate to your "running on empty" scenario. I was due to run with runchum tonight - she is much slower than me so it is normally not an effort, but she backed out today. Torn between the sofa option, or heading out for a run at "my" speed, I pushed myself to do the latter, and did 45 minutes, which was jolly hard work :o My calves ache, my hips ache and I generally didn't feel as though I had any oomph about me!

I have no idea of my speed or distance because I still don't have my garmin, so can't really judge it properly - perhaps I was going faster than I thought, or perhaps I was just running on empty too!

Anyway......am glad I went out and did it. I didn't *not* enjoy it, just found it hard work, which makes it even better that I pushed myself out of the front door, if that makes sense!!

    Happy running, everyone!

  • Woooooo...went for my first run in weeks today :) Only 20 minutes (2 miles) but better than not doing it! Hoping to keep it going now as I am planning on doing a marathon next year!

Think I now know why I felt like I was 'running on empty'. A virus arrived - thought I was just lacking in enough food to fuel my run and that was why I was tired. Anyway set off home yesterday and got in the car and thought - there's no way I'm going running tonight I'm shattered. Had an early night Tues and Wed feeling pretty rubbish last night and also today.

Running on hold until it passes - nearly wiped myself out dusting this evening! Should pass in a day or so and might be ok to go again on Sunday if it does

Definitely right to listen to your body and rest up when something like that hits!

I think mine is a definite lack of food thing - have been watching what I eat quite carefully over the last couple of weeks as the lbs have just started to creep on.....and today I only had cereal for breakfast and a salad for lunch.....possibly not enough for a run straight after work.

I hope you feel better soon.

Had to pull out of Sunday's at the last minute :(

The race was only a 15-20 minute walk from home, so the plan was to use that as my warm up...... but part way there I felt my shin splint (from last September) playing up :(

Inspected my shoes afterwards, and decided they were looking in a pretty sorry state (can't remember the last time I checked the soles, but having changed into a different pair to walk the dog I realised my heels were sinking into the ones I use for runs)

So I made a mad dash trip into the city centre before work yesterday, and went back to the store I got them from. The chap was horrified at the state of them given I've only done about 300 miles in them (they'd reckoned on 500 or possibly more), but they were definitely totally goosed and in desperate need of replacement :o

Had to stick with the same make due to width issues, but have the latest from a different range - and searching on G00gle last night found numerous reports of this being sold as a 'high mileage' shoe. Only time will tell how well they live up to that claim though, as they've only been on the market for about 6 weeks.......

Went out in them this morning, and did the route I last did 11 days ago. Shaved 20 secs/mile off my average pace (despite still taking a few short walk breaks), and my legs/feet felt a lot better when I got home :)

Sorry you had to pull out of Sunday's race, but at least you had done a good one on Saturday to compensate a little!

I'm "running in" new trainers too - I always buy New Balance for the width issues - have sworn by them for the last 20 years. I got my latest pair from the London Marathon Expo, so got them at a really good price. But even without the discount, there can be no price put on shoes that suit!

I hope the niggly shins don't give you any more problems over the summer.

New Balance are too narrow for me - and I've tried 3 or 4 of their 'models' in the last 9 months :(

The only ones that fitted last time I bought were Brooks, and I hit exactly the same thing this time.....

So much as I'd have liked to try a different make (to see if they lasted any better) it wasn't an option. I tried Asics - my trail shoes are theirs and fit fine, as are/do my original low-cushioned road shoes I now keep for taking the dog out - as well as New Balance and Saucony both times I've been in, and another I didn't catch the name of when I went in yesterday.

I don't know if you recall when I was running london a couple of years ago and I had those hideous blisters on the bottom of both feet (photos were posted at the time, but they had to come with a health warning!!).....they were from Saucony trainers. Needless to say, the trainers didn't last very long - I was gutted because they had seemed so comfy at first, and were not cheap.....but once I went back to NB shoes, I had no further problems!
