Have done 2 x 4 mile runs this week and this morning a 6mile run - all on intervals - getting better.

Had a nightmare with the laptop this week so haven't been around so much - happy running everyone!

    *slopes in sheepishly*

Hi guys! I popped in here about February time as I had a place in the Great North Run and basically needed to learn how to run! Since then I've done the Three Peaks Challenge (walking up mountains), the Race for Life 5k and the Great North 10k. The 10k was not my finest hour - the Three Peaks were only 3 weeks before and I had been concentrating on training for that rather than running in the weeks leading up to it, then it took me about a week to recover, so I only had 2 weeks training for the 10k and I must have walked at least 4k of it.

I did my first parkrun on Saturday but still am not able to run 5k without stopping to walk a couple of times. Then on Monday I was struck down with food poisoning so have been out of action all this week. I'm doing the parkrun tomorrow though and aim to slow my pace a little and get around without walking.

It's only 7 weeks til the GNR now so I'm hoping for no more injuries or illness which seem to have been blighting my training so far (sounds like a poor excuse but it's true), and wanted to join in on this thread a bit to keep me motivated! Is anyone else doing the GNR? What stage of training should I be at now?! :o

    Hi Tete!
I guess it depends what you want to achieve with your run, just to get round, get round comfortably or if you have a time goal. I guess you should be running 3/4 times a week and at this point your long run should be about 8miles .
My friend is doing a plan where he runs 4/5 times a week but bar the long run they are only 3/4mile runs then long run goes up week by week from 7/8/9/10/10.5/11/11.5.
How much running are you doing at the moment?

Well I did it and stuck to it and did another 6miler coming in at 6 x 8min runs and 6 x 1 min intervals

Shorter run planned for Thurs and longer run again at the weekend and might go for 9 min intervals

Hello, thanks very much for this info! I would like to get round 'comfortably' really - I did the 10k and walked quite a bit of it and was disappointed with myself afterwards - I'd like to get to the end and feel like I've given it my all, even if I am slow!

At the moment I'm doing about 5k about 3/4 times a week :o I know I need to make more time to do longer distances...

You really do need to get the longer distances in, otherwise you will really feel it after 8/9miles. I think what my friend is doing is bare minimum, I'd personally like to be more prepared, but each to their own. Maybe think about a set run/walk technique, that would probably give you most success and then when you walked, you wouldn't feel disappointed because that's the plan. Btw, I'll have to inform you that I've never run a half marathon, but I lurk a lot on runnersworld forum as I find the training really interesting. Maybe go and have a look and seek advise from there too. Quite a lot of the people there are quite serious about their running though...

Thanks Tirlittan, this is the kick up the bum I need. I have trouble pacing myself - I set off too fast and then have to stop and walk for a bit, then set off too fast again :o I'll have a look at Runners World, thank you. Am off for a run tonight after work, just going to do the ParkRun route (5k) but maybe try an extra lap of the park which is about 2k. The GNR is only three times that distance... :o

Hi tete, I wondered if this might be of use to you?

I used podrunner intervals from itunes podcasts to get from 5k to 10k - it has a section to go from 5k to 8k then 8k to 10k over about 20 weeks. You can miss weeks out if you find them way too easy. Plus points are its free to download and it's interval training with 1min or 90sec intervals built in until you reach the target distance.

Hi everyone :) I have been running but still building up from my break.....last run was 4.5 miles and I'm hoping to do 5 miles today. I've also started doing other excercises in between running (Zumba and pump it up dance DVD) which have been making me feel more motivated, although I have had to stop doing the other excercises while the littlies are off school (no way I am forcing my un-coordinated self onto them and their friends! At least not until I can do the routines with any type of grace, any at all :D).

Tete - I remember you from Feb :) Glad to see you back! Tirlittan has given some really good advice so no point in me saying the same ;)

Just back from a 10k run this morning. A slight dip in energy after 20mins then all well as I determinedly plodded on to the end and had another burst of energy over the last 2 miles. Pretty pleased with this week, have done this 3 times and next week is building up the running intervals over the same route

    Happy running everyone!

  • I'll probably be getting quite a bit of running in this week - I'm going to try for 6 miles today, this will be the first time for ages as I have really let my running slip :o After that I plan on a run a day for the next week (probably will have next Sat off) as I really want to build myself back up and I am used to running almost every day (or at least, I was!)
