does anyone have any advice for a fat person that hasnt run in years? websites etc that can tell me how to do it chart my progress ... should i buy any equipment (except the obligatory bra and shoes) any advice gratefully recieved

Hi Elantan, I would love to have a virtual run with you. My advice:

    1) Do not push but build up slowly
    2) Run for several minutes, recover, run, recover
    3) When running lean forward from the ankles - this way the pressure on joints is less (there is a book called Chi Running, might be worth seeing)
    4) Do resistence exercise to build the 'infrastructure' of running

Most important thing for women runners is sports bra; running shoes come second. Don't need anything else though I listen to music.

Charting progress: Nokia have an application for that as have iPhone. I personally use Nike+ which is part of iPod - unfortunately it locks you into what I call 'Holy Nikes' - they have space for the chip.

    Run safe and have fun.

Ran Week 5 Run 3 this morning and although it was hard work and I really felt it I did the 20mins with no stops so am well pleased with this.

Week 6 Run 1 is on Friday and I'm at the point where I can see the intervals ending and its non stop, so its the next stage forward to 5k

Today it was hills, or shall I say The Hill. Went with my son who is 9 1/3 - good training. I was stronger on The Hill - I am grown up after all - but he is good. He ran as much as me which means 9 times up and down the hill.

Have to become lighter - I am to run the Lausanne marathon in under 4h 30 min (she continues chanting into the distance).

Well done Sparkles and Firewalker :j

Three miles yesterday morning and two today. Aiming for a one mile tomorrow morning and then five in the afternoon. Feeling good now but my speed is not on the level it was in the end of May, onwards and upwards...

    Hi everyone!

I've been running for about 6 months now on and off (more off after a back injury in March and very much back on again in the last month) and am up to 2.5 miles without walking.

I did a 10k in May in 1hr 19 - which i was very proud of until I discovered that Paula Radcliffe did it in under 1 hour...while pregnant! lol!! I've got a long way to go with my penguin waddle!

I'm now aiming for a sub 1 hour in next years 10k and a few 5k runs and races leading up to the end of the year

A friend of mine attached his chip to the laces of ordinary (i.e. non-Nike+) trainers..... an 'eye' or two down, not the ends. dunno how, though......

Hi FP and welcome  You SHOULD be proud of 1.19 - well done :T :T

Well looks like I have managed to get a charity place for the GSR so can put my plans of running a half back a bit. Am out for a run this evening, still to decide whether to do just 2miles as I haven't been for a while or to go straight for the 4 miles.

Go with the intention of 4, then see how you feel as you go? Allow yourself to quit if you are struggling :)
