Can anyone provide any pointers please?

OH is following SW too and eats the same as me but he isn’t losing weight. He has about 6 teas a day with half a sugar so we count this as 3 syns.

    Yesterday his menu was….
    B – 2 toast (B) with butter (3) beans (F) 2 bacon (F)
    L – Banana (F)
D - Spanish Chicken (F) SW potatoes (F) salad (F) (this was a very full big plate)
Snx – Yoghurt banana & Granola Pudding (6)

Cups of tea with half sugar – 7 (3.5) (0.5 A) 10 mins on exercise bike (200 cals)

NB - he doesn’t like…. Pasta, Cheese, Eggs, Noodles, Mushrooms.

The only things I can think of is that he is maybe putting too much butter on his toast and I’m not counting enough syns or that he isn’t eating enough i.e. only a nana for lunch.

Appreciate any advice you have x

Hi- my OH tried SW too but after a couple of weeks of good losses (7Ib in first week- git :p) he stopped loosing and I think it was due to teh fact that he doesn't eat at all during the day- usually just fruit and yoghurt, then was having just one big meal in evening using all HEA's and HEB's in one go.

For you OH I would suggest-
    1. are you measuring the butter or guestimating? 1tsp full fat butter is 2 syns so is he really having 1.5tsp or more like 2 tsp per slice?
    2. Swap sugar for sweetner- save on the syns all together. If you get the granulated sweetner he can have a 1/2 spoon just like normal sugar. Yes it tastes a bit different to start with but after a short while you don't notice anymore.
    3. Try cutting out bread- is the bread from a small loaf too ie 400g loaf not 800g
    4. proper food at lunch time. Pack him up a salad with chicken or tuna or something.
    5. Swap banana for other fruit which is a speed food eg apples, satsumas etc
also 10 mins on exercise bike is probably not burning anywhere like 200kcal. This calculator works out how much you burn on average depending on your weight. As an example, in 10 mins I would use about 80kcal exercising moderately, and only just over 100kcal cycling 'vigorously'. He could try upping the amount of time exercising?

    Trixietoes,

    Is he underestimating syns?

When you say he has butter on his toast, do you mean 'real' butter on low fat marg. The thing is 3 syns worth of butter is very very little. I don't think you could spread it over two slice of toast.

Same with the sugar in tea - is he thinking what difference does it make and putting in an extra wee bit of sugar each time?

Agree. "half" a sugar, is pretty difficult to gauge really. Different spoons, different halves, etc.

Have you tried splenda. I have put them in peoples tea who have sugar and they havent noticed. I also use sweetex and powdered sweetner as well.

I would personally use my syns for something more exciting!

Also half a sugar is pretty much stopping, would he give up sugar in his tea completely? I am at the point where I have sweetners but if im at someones house who doesnt have them, I can go without, quite happily.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    Thanks for the responses....

The bacon... yes we cut off all the visible fat from it so it is just meat left... oh how I miss the crispy bits though :D... but not enough for 8 syns

The butter .... yes it is real butter  ... I thought I may be underestimating. The toasts are the little 400g slices so not very big but I think that could be part of the problem... I may try weighing it out so we both can see how little is there for the syns... or buy low fat stuff

The sugar.. probably he is having more that 2.5g. He won't have sweetner though as his friends dad developed liver damage from prolonged use of it... I've tried to tell him to use it just until he has lost what weight he wants to it will be ok... but he's not having it. I use splenda .. and he has it in cooking too but doesn't know :shhh:. He has mentioned giving up sugar so he'll have to now.

    Today he's had
B - 2 toast (400g slices) his butter which is probably more like 5 or 6 probably
L - takeaway size tub of salad and Jerk flavoured chicken, and a big apple.
    D - Veggie curry/chilli and rice
Snx - ? And his gallons of tea probably about 4 or 5 so far.

I like to have free meals and then use my syns for exciting stuff too.

I'll speak to him when he gets back and see what he says re sugar and low fat spread...and get him to eat more speed foods.

Thanks so much everyone, it really has helped xx

just weighed out 4 portions of 10g butter... I must say it looks loads. I've wrapped them in foil so there is his portion control and 3.5 syns per portion - please tell me this is right... it's what it says in my book but it could be out of date x

that's right - 10g = 3.5. It is quite a lot really isn't it? That's what I found. If you leave a portion out to soften up before use he will be able to spread it thinner, too. Or do what they do in sandwich shops and melt it completely then brush it on! OR, plain yoghurt or quark on the bread instead of butter in a sandwich is quite acceptable as long as you aren't expecting the buttery taste, just the softening effect on the bread.
    :jThat's 2 stone 9 lbs gone forever:j

    thank you Slimming World!

You can also mix the 28g cereal (or one weetabix) with fresh fruit and a muller light yoghurt and save all your milk for teas and coffees. Melon, strawberries, raspberries, cooked rhubarb (half a syn!), pineapple, are some of my favourites to eat for breakfast this way
Yummm I love alpen or Jordens Muesli..... I'll be giving this a try when I'm able to eat a little better for definate!!! thanks :T
