Where to live in London? Please help

I wouldnt go for E&C either.
As a rough guide, dont go for anything inside the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, Haringey, Newham, and Hackney.
Some people who live there might protest, but the truth is, these are filthy gang-ridden khazis that are best avoided.
Look to Clapham/Balham/Earlsfield/Southfield area in SW London, Bromley, Orpington, Petts wood areas in SE London.
Dont go north of the river. You get nose-bleeds there and the people are odd.
Actually I've live in harrigay and had no problems but then that was just Crouch End, Wood Green, Muswell Hill is also lovely. Though I wouldn't live anywhere else in the area.
Croydon is too far out & I wouldn't live there0 -
Forty-five minutes travel to work is actually not a lot of time in London, when everything crawls in rush hour.
Probably possible to get to Soho from Battersea/Vauxhall. Wembley, Kingston and Catford would probably be touching an hour plus. Remember you need to factor your walk to the station, getting on transport (often tubes/trains are so busy you have to let several pass), transport delays and the walk at the other end.
You might want to do some short term lets in different places while you get to know London. And I think you'll need a fair few payrises before you'll be in a position to buy a place!
Catford - Charing X by train = 25 mins...0 -
North London also includes the very desirable LB Barnet, which is LOVELY ( are there any crap bits of barnet?) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
OK, I was exaggerating about the whole of north london a bit!
lynz is correct Barnet (or Barnay as it should be pronounced) is tres posh, and its only really the eastern half of Haringay thats bad.
Nonetheless, I stick to my guns (and knives) about Lambeth, Southwark, and Newham. The nicest bits of Clapham are 'twixt the commons and in Wandsworth generally, and defo not in the Clapham Park neighbourhood. Emphasis on hood. Southwark is also dire, with the exception of places like shad thames, and you aint getting even a share of a broom closet there for £600pcm! In fact, just down from E&C is Walworth. Gang central. More nasty estates than you can shake the TSG at.
As to Newham. Oh dear.
There are of course loads of nice places in London, most of the south and north west are good, with a few exceptions and the outer south east is aslo very good.
I dont have any agenda here. I just wouldnt want OP to end up in some dreadful slum.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -

No me either, but I have to say when you LIVE IN as opposed to driving through these "slum" areas they can be the best place you ever lived. )
I guess thats what her friend means when she liked vauxhall or others suggest wembley, homerton, new cross.
Out of interest, does anyone have any thoughts about Eltham?
( Surrey quays/canada water is in Southwark BTW. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Very much agree about Clapham park by the way and "north clapham" that is very much stockwell really.
The downer about that bit of Wandsworth you talk of toward St Johns Hill is that there is no tube there. Id much rather live in clapham "proper" with its myriad high street, than over that way, bijou as it is. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Yes, but I work in Vauxhall. Trust me. Its the most depressing experience to emerge from the tube station into vauxhall. I recently went on a course in Putney and I was about 1000000% happier for the whole of that week just because I didnt have to put up with vauxhall. It really is a poophole. I cant tell you how much I hate it. I couldnt possibly imagine living there.
What. A. Toilet.
Have a friend who lived in Eltham. He left because he was married to an asian women and things were not exactly pleasant for them.
Eltham Palace is lovely though, well worth a visit.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -

Ah, but you have the trains into victoria and clapham junction.
Infinitely preferable to the northern line.
Battersea is quite nice too.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -
Thanks for that about Eltham, Ive been, thought it looked pretty nice/ average. I wondered why it was so cheap to be honest? ( aside form the fact the train seemed to cost 7 quid from London bridge which I thought was pretty toppy!
I dont mind Vauxhall! Not much in it but I prefer E&C as a) its busier, b) theres 2 tubes and for the walking its really pivotal - eas walk to westminster, the strand, the city, etc. But real people live here so there is bargain shopping ( £ shops, markets that sort of thing)
Not that into Battersea too many posh mummies for my liking ( Im a secret scruff can you tell!) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I grew up near Eltham, and I wouldn't live there....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
