My friend has suggested looking at Islington and Angel area. I have also talked with my boyfriend and he said that if I live closer to the north then he's likely to come more often as it won't take as long to get there. I'm still going to consider the south but I can see that the north can make sense. Islington being Victoria line can also be helpful as that goes to Oxford Circus and Kings Cross being helpful for work and travelling up north to see boyfriend and family.

Does anyone have suggestions for good, fun, young and safe places that I could afford that are on northern sides of the Central (between zones 2 & 4), Victoria and Bakerloo Lines that takes less than 45 mins to Oxford Circus. I think places on the northern side of those lines make the most sense for work and boyfriend.

Thanks again for everyones help :) My list of places to look at got really long and I was getting conflicting advice so I thought cutting down to places on suitable lines. Then its more realistic to look at those places in a weekend. Once I've lived in London long enough I will of explored more and will find the perfect place for me but still need a first place :)

    Hi there

Id live anywhere on the north side of the Northern line to be honest. Theres nowhere on the barnet branch I wouldnt live at all all those areas on that line are really nice.

The edgware branch is less useful Id suggest although the bits south of Brent cross or hendon are best. I dont know a lot about the areas north of golders to be totally honest. But golders green is also really nice !

    Have just read all this!

    1) it appears London is a !!!!!y place to live
    2) OP is working in Soho, but is going to use Oxford Circus, so really leaving Overground to Victoria and then Vic line, or Vic or Central Line.
    3) I would offer Walthamstow. End of Vic line so always a seat and easy to get to KX for home time.
    4) Piccadilly line is also an option, and opens up alot of London, and gets to KX.

My choices, I am a North Londoner:-
    • Wood Green -going for Alexandra Palace side, possibly overground into Finsbury Pk. Green space, restaurants etc
    • Bounds Green as above, but on tube and bus ride to Muswell Hill for green spaces, restaurants, the odd celeb spot etc
    • Walthamstow - on tube
    • Ealing (around the common/)
Moving to London is daunting, but should be fun. I lived in West and East London before settling North. . . and the nose bleeds happen when you venture sarf, and that is where the wierdies are!

As for house share with pets - why are people so freaking uptight?? Its not a python or a pitbull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will find a house share that loves cats, and also landlords that let you have cats (I rent with 3 cats, a dog and a tortoise. . . and have done 4 2 yrs, as well as boarding rescue dogs and I live in a nice flat in a nice area)

Thank you :) I will put those areas on my new list (some south areas such as Battersea, Kingston and Wimbledon are still on my list).

LOL at the North and South comments.

Thats amazing! I'm hoping I will find a landlord as good as yours :D

All saints is OK you know. Looks worse than it is , I think anyway. I used to live near to Devons rd station, but used bow rd mainly, it was FINE. You heard of things happening ( kids mainly, fighting among themselves) but never really saw anything . All saints is tatty though, make no mistake !

They are putting in a new DLR station between All saints and Devons rd as well.

I used to live on Devons Rd near the shops, yeah it's ok. Not much happens there, good transport to central london & docklands, good access to parks and canal.
Kids hanging around the shops mainly.
  • Glad you are back on, thought all out narf/sarf rivalry had put you off!

We move in 3 weeks, but its a dubious 2 bed at £320 a week. . . we use it fine as a couple but as sharing it may be a bit tight, but it has a garden and in a brilliant road in Muswell Hill.

You will find your space, thats the joy of London! I would add to your list price, bills, commute are basics, but look at access to amenities you want, food shops, gym/pool, parks, theatres, libraries, restaurants.

I agree on the Northen line comments from lynzpower, but it is also the most expensive tube line to live on and Piccadilly and Vic are more reliable, especially if you live after Finsbury Park and can then change to whichever one you need after that.

Very true Greenmoneysaver. I would like to live in Highgate, East Finchley, Mill hill but alas I just cant afford it. although a houseshare might throw something up im sure.

  • Thanks lynz - we got into Muswell Hill off the back off astronomical prices in E17, there was only about a 10-15% difference in prices!

We love it and wouldn;t move away, however use the W7 to get to Finsbury Park more than use Northern Line.

East Finchley would also be an option.

I really like Muswell hill as well ( who wouldnt!) but its just that public transport issue for me ( plus the astronomical rents sometimes charged!) thats put me off :D

I was going to suggest E17 as well, has that gone expensive - please NO!

If Walthamstow Central on the Victoria is too expensive flats and flat-shares can be found at Blackhorse Road and Tottenham Hale (nowhere near the more dodgy bits of the 'nam) which are about 25 minutes from Oxford Circus. There are some pretty decent properties round the back of Seven Sisters station as well but that might be a bit too "lively" for an out-of-towner's first home here.

Never forget that there are decent streets in even the most unpromising neighbourhoods. I live on one myself

Nice and central, almost certainly way over your budget, I'm afraid.y
