What about London bridge or docklands
  • Have just read all this!

    1) it appears London is a !!!!!y place to live
    2) OP is working in Soho, but is going to use Oxford Circus, so really leaving Overground to Victoria and then Vic line, or Vic or Central Line.
    3) I would offer Walthamstow. End of Vic line so always a seat and easy to get to KX for home time.
    4) Piccadilly line is also an option, and opens up alot of London, and gets to KX.

My choices, I am a North Londoner:-
    • Wood Green -going for Alexandra Palace side, possibly overground into Finsbury Pk. Green space, restaurants etc
    • Bounds Green as above, but on tube and bus ride to Muswell Hill for green spaces, restaurants, the odd celeb spot etc
    • Walthamstow - on tube
    • Ealing (around the common/)
Moving to London is daunting, but should be fun. I lived in West and East London before settling North. . . and the nose bleeds happen when you venture sarf, and that is where the wierdies are!

As for house share with pets - why are people so freaking uptight?? Its not a python or a pitbull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will find a house share that loves cats, and also landlords that let you have cats (I rent with 3 cats, a dog and a tortoise. . . and have done 4 2 yrs, as well as boarding rescue dogs and I live in a nice flat in a nice area)
Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
    Total so far £28

Limehouse is nice but expensive, south of commercial road. North of commercial road, rather live in mogadishu.

Again, anywhere nice around London Bridge is going to be outrageously expensive and the rest is going to be a khazi.

Really its most often a case that the nice areas in zone 2/3 are massively expensive and the affrodable areas are affordable because no-one wants to live there.

Best of looking to places like wandsworth, bromley, or their northern (gghhaa-tuu) equivalents.

you can get shares in limehouse and also the docklands themselves i.e. below Canary Wharf. Anything North to Victoria Park is ok though I would't live on the estate near the canal(not sure about All Saints)

OK, I was exaggerating about the whole of north london a bit!

lynz is correct Barnet (or Barnay as it should be pronounced) is tres posh, and its only really the eastern half of Haringay thats bad.

Nonetheless, I stick to my guns (and knives) about Lambeth, Southwark, and Newham. The nicest bits of Clapham are 'twixt the commons and in Wandsworth generally, and defo not in the Clapham Park neighbourhood. Emphasis on hood. Southwark is also dire, with the exception of places like shad thames, and you aint getting even a share of a broom closet there for £600pcm! In fact, just down from E&C is Walworth. Gang central. More nasty estates than you can shake the TSG at.

    As to Newham. Oh dear.

There are of course loads of nice places in London, most of the south and north west are good, with a few exceptions and the outer south east is aslo very good.

I dont have any agenda here. I just wouldnt want OP to end up in some dreadful slum.

Thank you :) Especially the places... hoods to avoid and that. Really helpful :)

OP with an indoor cat, are you sure about a house share being an option? I have two indoor cats and they do sometimes try and get out the front door when it's open - my siamese has got out several times and it is an absolute PITA getting her back inside. With housemates, can you expect them to be super careful not to let Remus out?

I know you want to narrow down some areas in advance but London is so big you do need to spend some time there before picking an area. I would also echo what others have said about it not being as scary as it seems once you get there. You might read a lot about violence etc, but put it into context - look how many people live there!

I'm thinking a small house share as theres less people to risk letting him out but will still give him and me space and be affordable. It will also be a good way to make a few friends.

All saints is OK you know. Looks worse than it is , I think anyway. I used to live near to Devons rd station, but used bow rd mainly, it was FINE. You heard of things happening ( kids mainly, fighting among themselves) but never really saw anything . All saints is tatty though, make no mistake !

They are putting in a new DLR station between All saints and Devons rd as well.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
