Where to live in London? Please help

Sorry I missed this
I think you are getting rather het up, London is london, to an extent as compared to most other places in the UK it is "dodgy" Could that be "ethnic diversity", the scruffiness, binbags piled up and litter on the road ( problem in every borough in my view) There is a lot of homlessness, people with mental health problems, drink problems, and teenage gangs. These probs exist everywhere, and you cant escape them without being in a Zone 1 apartment block but still the homeless people and rubbish situation wont be dramatically better. And why should you, its oK, it isnt DANGEROUS, just scruffy. Its easy for me to say this though I been here 10 years and not a single dodgy thing has happened to me or anyone I know aside from a story I know from someone who lived Streatham/ Brixton and I probably wouldnt choose there, but then again I said Id never live here, but I am and I love it!
Vauxhall is no different to elephant & castle, its a 10 min walk from my place to Vauxhall interchange- apart from the Vauxhall bit which borders the houses of parliament & that side of the road. Your chances of being able to afford that are slim lets say!
If your freind is happy with vauxhall, then every area we have mentioned between us will be the same if not better.
You need to come down and see how you feel, can you get a budget coach, an A-z and a travel card and just wander?
Thanks, its not so much the scruffiness of a place but the safety. I'm just looking for somewhere that I can afford to live in but where I can walk and not be attacked or robbed. Everywhere I've ever lived has been researched before hand and I've lived in safe areas. For instance, I'm from Chester. I know to avoid Blacon as its rough and not very safe. I just don't want to end up in a 'Blacon' area of London. Make sense?
London is very big so was looking for what areas I should look in and avoid so I can lower the search area to look around. I'm thinking of going for a wander after graduation next week0 -
Earlsfield has a train about every 5 minutes and more in rush hour. It's in Zone 2.
The main problem is getting yourself on a train after about 7.30am in the morning as loads of people commute from further away and change at Clapham Junction.
Earlsfield isn't Zone 2 - it's Zone 3.0 -
Forty-five minutes travel to work is actually not a lot of time in London, when everything crawls in rush hour.
Probably possible to get to Soho from Battersea/Vauxhall. Wembley, Kingston and Catford would probably be touching an hour plus. Remember you need to factor your walk to the station, getting on transport (often tubes/trains are so busy you have to let several pass), transport delays and the walk at the other end.
You might want to do some short term lets in different places while you get to know London. And I think you'll need a fair few payrises before you'll be in a position to buy a place!
From wembley you'll get to soho in 45mins.0 -
Another nut against freedom of speech I see.
Political correct cowards have you trained well lmao.
Not at all. You had the freedom to say something half-witted. The rest of us also have freedom of speech, to point out that it was a stupid thing to say. Free speech all round!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
With that budget, and working in Soho, I'd look at living in the SE. Doesn't matter if there isn't a tube, because the overland trains can let you off at Charing Cross, just a short walk from Soho.
I'd consider Blackheath, Lewisham, Kidbrooke, and further in, Kennington, Waterloo....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Blackheath too expensive, Kidbrooke - now the estate is being bulldosed it's looking a much nicer place.0 -

Well I like it
But then I dont know "blacon", its tricky isnt it ( I do know chester and its lovely - the centre, not seen much of the rest!) I did just have a look at a vid of Blacon, here (http://www.chesterwiki.com/Blacon) It loooks big, which london areas are not. Vauxhall to Elephant to Kennington, well you are talking about 15 mins walk each way around. If you see what I mean. London areas merge in the way that other areas just dont.... ( trying to find a better way of explaining!)
saying that its horses for courses, I wouldn't live in Wembley for example, I said Id never live here in Elephant. Im not sure I would live in New Cross, because I guess its equally as dodgy/tatty as here IN E&C, but E&C you can walk into town. Financially there isnt much in it either IMV.
I cant choose for you as Im just not sure what sort of person you are, and what sort of noise/hassles you will tolerate. I will say the longer you live in london the more you will tolerate. Things dont seem quite as scary or intimidating when you have been here a year or so.
When I moved here first I lived in Surrey Quays, I can see you have had recommendations for this area. SQ is lovely, I mean to look at you cant fault it, but I found it rather soulless in the end so moved to E3/Bow as soon as my contract was up, as I wanted a more community feel, even if it was a lot scruffier than the polished look of the riverside docks:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

OP, there are 3 criteria that are affecting your decision:
- length of commute
- budget
- cat
You may have to compromise on one of these. How does having a cat work in a house share- will it have run of everyone's rooms? What about cat flap, litter tray and bringing in "presents"? Won't you be concerned about the proximity of so many busy roads?

I wouldnt go for E&C either.
As a rough guide, dont go for anything inside the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, Haringey, Newham, and Hackney.
Some people who live there might protest, but the truth is, these are filthy gang-ridden khazis that are best avoided.
Look to Clapham/Balham/Earlsfield/Southfield area in SW London, Bromley, Orpington, Petts wood areas in SE London.
Dont go north of the river. You get nose-bleeds there and the people are odd.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0
