Where to live in London? Please help

Where are you moving from? Just noticed you live in Huddersfield, does your train come into Kings Cross/Euston? So you could look at anywhere along the northern/piccadilly/victoria lines, if you're travelling into soho then those lines would be handy for there too, and make travelling home to see family nice and easy.0

I have another vote for Clapham. I also work in a 'media' type agency and when I first moved to London that was the first place I started looking as thats where a lot of the other young people at the agency worked. Quick & easy to get into town & a lot of transport options. Check out gumtree.co.uk to find a flatshare but keep your wits about you, there are some nutters & chancers on there but I found 2 good flatshares on there.0

Perivale is fine, very cosmopolitan and has access to the Regents canal and some green spaces for walking , its only a bus ride from Ealing which has lots of bars and coffee places. Has easy access to the tube also, I lived there for 20 odd years and although its not so quiet as it used to be its still an ok place..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

you cna easily walk from soho to vauxhall in under 45 mins although the cheaper places in this area are probably the not so great roads.
It just depends what you want, what sort of place.
I cant find any 1bed self contained in SW8 for that money ( it is v central)
There is "buzzing" and there is criminal.
The buzzing but not that criminal is likely to be out of your range although you may well drop lucky if you are able to consider a studio.
There is cheap and tatty, they are not always "BAD" areas
There is cheap and miles away from town, but are lovely areas, your chislehursts, chingford type places.
Clapham is great ( as Is angel/ balhma/ putney type places) but I doubt the OP will be able to find much self contained on this budget? Although Im sure a share would be possible at this rate, but again, issues with the cat in sharing. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Thanks will have a look at those places and cross off Catford.

I could travel for an hour at a push but would prefer less. I have travelled from Wembley and Perivale before and it took between 40-60mins. My work is only 5min walk from Oxford Circus station so not far to walk that end. I wouldn't be travelling at rush hour too. They said that I'll probably be working 7am-4pm.
Not keen on short term lets. Because of my disability I get a lot of anxiety attacks especially when my routine changes. Moving to London is going to be hard as it is.

Thanks! I very well might be back in touch and I'll have a look at the places you suggested tooI think from what you said I will just drop Wembley from my list.
Gumtree worries me a little as it a site full of scammersI will have a look though, will get my mum to check them first though.
They have just said to let them know once I've settled and I should be able to start within the month. Its good that they really liked me

Yeah, I've found that with Perivale so I know it would be a shared place to live. I'm worried about the sharing thing as I do have problems with social interaction. I'm hoping I will find lively flatmates with similar interests if I go that way as I cope better with people like that. I've done it before but they were very close and I couldn't break into that so kinda hid in my room or was out a lot so didn't really see them.
Thanks for the time break down, that will be helpful

I'm pretty sure its Kings Cross / Pancras. I would prefer an easier trip to work rather than travelling back. I'm not planning on visiting family much and my boyfriend who is staying in Huddersfieldhas a motorbike so said he will ride down to see me as I'll struggle to afford trains up (trains to huds are expensive).
I think the lines to Oxford Circus are Central, Victoria and errr the brown one. At the moment I've been looking at places more on the west side of London (North, South & Middle) as I was told the west side is nicer.

Thanks, gonna check out places in Clapham now0 -
p.s. if you get a train to wakefield, book early enough on eastcoast trains and you can go from about a tenner each way. I travel up there now & then.x0

I've lived in London all of my life (SE16 mostly, but also Shoreditch).
I've seen some suggestions in this thread I wouldn't go near (sorry!). You won't get anything for £600 alone, but you can find people to share with on Gumtree. Most of them already have found a property and are just looking for a flatmate to move in.
New Cross Gate is good for nice, old Victorian conversions and great transport connections (new East London line, trains direct to London Bridge and a big bus garage).
East London is good for cheaper rents than elsewhere north of the river but prices are going up... Dalston is affordable but a bit too rough for me.0 -
West is nicer in zone 1, but you wouldn't get anywhere for £600 there! Outside of zone 1 there's lots of nice areas scattered around. Depending where you are in Soho, nearest tubes are Tottenham Court Road, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square as well as Oxford Circus.0

My friend lived in Vauxhall so I think I'd ask her to come look at places with me as I have heard similar to what you've said. Worrys me how close to Brixton it is too. What areas of Vauxhall would you avoid? Like is everywhere south Vauxhall bad or the east.etc.
I'm trying to not get a studio but I know its probable. My only concern with a studio is Remus (my cat) will hate being trapped in one room and may be naughty because of it. One reason why a shared might be better. Theres so many pro's and con's to living alone or shared, its hard to decide! Kinda leaving cost to that decision now.0 -
I think a houseshare is really your best bet. My budget was £600 a month and the flats I looked at were more like cupboards! So I lived in houseshares for a few years before deciding that I wanted to live alone and now live 30 mins outside London in order to be able to afford the luxury. The houseshare thing is also a really good way of making friends when you first come into London.0
