Refuse Work Placement on Flexible New Deal

Nothing changes on these boards, I really think these boards are not regulated enough, because people go off the topic and get on their soap box, the question here is... why the hell should a human be made to work 30+ hrs a week for so little money, this is the UK, not africa, this is just a sheep in wolfs clothing to get free labour, its bloody disgusting, and all you high and mighty ones moaning on how its better than nothing blah blah, my daughter went all threw this, she never got a job at the end of it, shes has 10 gcses, 4 a levels, is very intelligent, so dont say shes not capable to work on her own or in a group, she is more than capable, this new deal work placements are just a modern slavery for a pittence of benefit money.
I wish you good luck OP, really mean thatNickdolman wrote: »Hi im a 41 yr old guy with a wife and child and im just about to start on the FND on Friday after being out of work for the last 12mnths
I havent got a problem working i want to work but i have a problem for working for £1.60 a hour why not pay me the minimum wage? For a company that have no intentions of giving u a job after there free labour
What will happen if i refuse to do the Work Placement
Isnt it against the law to force someone to work for less than the minimal wage?
Thxs
Ps please dont slate me because im unemployed0 -
Instead of pointless schemes and useless paperwork how about spending the money on trying to create decent jobs.
How about people use periods of unemployment to obtain skills that will make them employable?
How many of the long term unemployed are actually doing something that will improve their job prospects?0 -
ps, Labelling workfare or any other nuisance course as help has already been done numerous times on this forum.
Arg, you didn't answer my question about what you would suggest to help people back into work.
Clearly you don't feel work placements are of any use / benefit, are slave labour, etc., so when somebody has been out of work for 12 months or more and been unsuccesful in securing employment, what do you think is the best way to help people move forward and get back to work?
How would you improve Nickdolman's chances of convincing an employer to take him on when he is competing against people who are either in work or recently out of work? What would you say to an employer as Nickdolman's advocate to convince that employer to give him a chance?
I know your answer will not be to put him into a position where he has just gained recent work experience or is currently gaining work experience, and therefore able to give a recent or current reference from an employer.
Nickdolman, I would suggest you see what your Adviser says and how they can help you. There are aspects of FND (and the Job Centre) other than work placements, in fact many people who start FND do not get to the stage of going on a placement because they get help into work beforehand. Work placements do not kick in the instant you start FND.0 -

Hmmmmmm i certainly do wonder!!!!! Did your daughter work as a temp over christmas by any chanceForums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
Untrue that people are sacked to make way for work placements. That would be illegal now wouldn't it. Hope you've reported it to ACAS.
Rubbish. Happens a lot. Proving it is the tricky bit but doesn't alter the reality.
Re-read the post - the bit which says people go into work from placements is a clue.
So what? Doesn't affect the overall numbers in work at all. Just means your type help themselves to taxpayers money having accomplished nothing.
I do have a 'proper' job as you put it, working on average 50 hours per week helping people find jobs, and no, I do not work for a training company.
Another day, another story.
ranting bilge
Boring
I've never been called utterly contemptible before
Pleasure0 -
It's not really slave labour is it, lets be honest.
Unless of course I missed that 'work placements' are still only for African Americans in rags getting whipped for not rowing hard enough, tricked into it on the promise of a new job and riches for their families in the promised land!0 -
First thing exprog I did not say 'ranting bilge', I said pseudo political ranting, so you have clearly edited my text when you quoted it.
As for your comments, they have been sooo persuasive and full of good argument that I have now changed my mind and agree wholeheartedly with you. Therefore ...
Everybody who starts a work placement can only do so because the company sacks somebody to make way.
I am helping myself to tax payers money and accomplishing nothing, although that's not strictly true as it helped me buy a new car.
Another day another story, again almost ... another day another dollar (see previous comment).
I disagree about the 'ranting bilge' though as I don't think it was that boring.
And I'm still utterly comtemptible which is fab news.
You never did answer the question as to what you would do to help people but that doesn't matter because that would make you like me, and of course we wouldn't want that now would we.
Ah well. I feel I have nothing further to say on the matter as I am now a convert to the Dark Side. It only remains for me to tender my resignation as I have now changed. This of course is very good news and will help maintain the status quo by making way for a New Deal work placement. :T0 -

Slave labour may be a harsh word to use - but what else would you call it?
I'm sure everyone is just dying to work for free so come the weekend you can chill out and look forward to counting the ammount of zeros you've just earnt working a 30+ plus hour week.
This "programme" may well be useful for those straight from school, or those who have disabilities, learning probs. etc/ fresh from prison etc. and a way for those to "reform" and get back into society whilst claiming benefit.
But the way I see it, from someone who is genuinely seeking work and has grabbed a part time job just to back me up as I'm gonna kick this scheme in the nuts very shortly, it's an absolute scam and just a way for the government to make their future figures look like they've done a good job in cutting down people on the dole.
Another example is I have been reassigned a new work experience placement which is ridiculously nothing like I would have liked and is in an area where I have to take a bus, then a train , then another bus to get to - about an hour of faffing about. Another guy who lives in this area was assigned to something I'd possibly be interested in and he has to do vice versa. It's absoulutly mind boggling how these "advisors" work these things out.
All these job centres, employment agencies are here because of unemployment so, in a way, they should be grateful or otherwise they'd be on the other side of the desk. I wonder what they would say then?0 -
People don't get that you are a slave to the government being paid by them. It makes no difference what amount you get.
If you are being paid by the government you are a soldier or a criminal doing community service or a statistic.
If they had a scheme in partnership with private companies or nice jobs to do that you would like to do anyway with training provided than this would be fantastic for your health and nobody should refuse it. You have to see yourself as being paid by the government. Perhaps they should send a payslip to show you the equivalent of what you are earning. This would make it more attractive and give you some sense of independence. I don't mind being forced to work as long as it's good work.0
