when we flew out of Birmingham Airport Aug this year we went to the security check,i had to put my crutches on the belt, which is fair enough,
before i did though one of the security men told me to hold on to his shoulders as i couldnt support myself, they got my sticks through really quick then the security man walked through the scanner with me, supporting me,i didnt think they were allowed to do that.
on our return to Birmingham
we were stood in the line for passport control when one of the officers came up to me,opened the barrier & said "everyone with walking sticks or crutches to the front".
i was really amazed by this, i was prepared to wait in line, even though i was in a lot of pain.
i really do have to give a 10/10 for the Security/Immigration at Birmingham.0 -

I would be careful about assuming that special services are available in airports to disabled people- my husband has MS which, amongst many other things means he is registered disabled and often has to use a wheelchair to get around. Whilst waiting for a flight from Manchester Airport which was delayed by 3 hours we were told by the airline that we had no entitlement to use the lounge which would have allowed my husband quick and easy access to a toilet and place to rest. Instead he had no other choice but to stay in his wheelchair in a busy cafe for 3 hours. By the time we got to our destination, it took my husband a week to recover!0

Forgot to say that the girl on security at Manchester Airport also referred to my husband as "the wheelchair"- we're pretty used to that sort of thing but the woman behind us was appalled0

I live in Durham and the local County Council has a safer communities scheme currently running where free security equipment is fitted to the homes of vulnerable people. I own my home but that didn't matter.
I'm vulnerable by virtue of being disabled.
The guys came on Friday and fitted a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector and door chains to the front and back doors.
I nearly got British Gas to fit the carbon monoxide detector - that's £30 saved!
I only found out about the scheme by chance- I was asked to have someone along to a group I teach to talk about the scheme, and I realised I was eligible for help too!Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -

I got told that if you have a disability, you can get the local fire brigade to install a smoke alarm for you.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I have read most of this thread a while ago but it's been so long I would really appreciate it if people could refresh me - I've just been awarded high rate mobility and mid rate care DLA. I live in Ely which is near Cambridge, other than the concessionary bus pass and disabled rail card, is there anything that I can apply for which would help me? I think I read about a card for cinemas, could someone fill me in?
Much appreciated in advance.0 -

I think you may mean the Cinema Exhibitors' Association CardTo apply for the card you will need submit proof to show that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

You will also need to supply a passport-sized photo with your application to appear on the card.

You download the application from the website: http://www.ceacard.co.uk/downloads.htm0 -
