  • Going to Haggerston Castle on Monday and having a day out to Alnwick Castle (where they filmed Harry Potter). Emailed in advance and told that Carer goes FREE saving £12.50 ! They also have Alnwick gardens which i assume is also Carer goes FREE but not planning on going to that so didn't ask.

I use a walking stick and have never had this happen to me in Oxford. In fact, after queuing for ages, it was my turn at the counter and I got told I'd gone to the wrong one and I couldn't pay there and pointed to another queue (the check out wasn't even visible!) which was clearly much longer than the one I'd been in. I explained I have mobility issues and was already in pain from standing still too long to reach this check out and as they had a till, I'd appreciate it if she'd let me pay there. She point blank refused and said "we are customer services" ....

Personally I'd phone Head Office and complain. That's a terrible way to treat someone who had explained they were in pain.

Have read through part of the thread but not had time to read it all, so apologies if this has already been mentioned...

I stick to the thought that - It is always worth asking, the worst they can do is say no.

Just been in london and got -

Priority tickets for london eye (Saved about an hour queueing and we had gone early!) - £14 for myself and carer

London film museum - £10 for myself and carer (think they were £14 each but could be wrong, know it was reduced rate & carer free though)

London Dungeons - £11 for myself and carer (Booked online before we went)

Imperial War Museum - Carer goes free to paid for exhabitions (although there was some confusion about this, dont think they get asked much about it)

I took my blue badge with me, but if it is being used in the car then I have photocopies of both sides in my bag with me.

I would not of been able to queue for the london eye, so without the priority tickets we could not have done it. I also cannot go anywhere on my own, so even if only i want to do something we have to get 2 tickets. These discounts and reduced queueing meant I could do more and enjoy myself for a change. Would of loved to have done more but am obviously limited.

My dad did comment "I would rather pay double the price everyone else paid and have my daughter healthy and able to fully enjoy the experience" which I am sure everyone here would agree with

I think that this would make an interesting campaign. To encourage shops to provide a folding type seat for walking impaired customers. However some major retailers don't even provide customer toilets!! With MS you need accessible toilets. The toilets could be accessible with a RADAR key and both toilet and folding seat would present an advertising opportunity???

I suspect both failures contravene the DDA!

People who live in Plymouth are entitled to a Plymcard, which entitles you to money off leisure activities. Went into Central Park this morning and asked how much someone with a disabled persons bus pass (white pass with yellow stripe) pays for a swimming session. (not lesson) You pay the same as you would if you had the green Plymcard.

The bus pass acts as your Plymcard in Plymouth.

  • Hi Everyone.

For those on means tested benefits and with a disability, I can recommend Scottish and Southern Electricity for Gas and Electric. They have been my suppliers for over a year now. They promise to reconnect your supply as a priority in the event of a power cut. They also operate a fridgesavers type scheme, whereby, a customer on this tariff whose Fridge or Fridgefreezer is no longer energy efficient, can have a replacement Fridge freezer Supplied Delivered and your old appliance taken away for £50, or in the case of a standalone fridge, its supplied, delivered and the old appliance taken away FREE OF CHARGE. I was previously with eon, and am saving £45 per month on this tariff. Rates for Gas are, from my most recent bill in september:
    YOUR GAS BILL
Your Tariff is energyplus Care General Domestic
    Standard energy
    351.34 kWh at 2.050p each £7.20
    Standing charge at 10.690p for 92 day(s) £9.83
Less your Monthly Direct Debit Discount -£0.43
    and electricity
Your Tariff is energyplus Care Domestic Standard
    Standard energy
    1033 units at 7.86p each £81.19
    Standing charge at 11.210p for 92 day(s) £10.31
Less your Monthly Direct Debit Discount -£4.87

Hope this helps someone in a similar situation to me!

My Mum is partially sighted/partially deaf and as such is now classed as disabled.

Like most here, I never knew there were good discounts/facilities for disabled. I am asking more often nowadays!

    Thumbs Up: Birmingham hippodrome
If disabled person could not attend on their own, then both disabled and carer go half price. Best seats available offered. Also, there are special touch tours and audio performances which are excellent AND free!

    Thumbs Down: Virgin Car Park
Near Birmingham Hippodrome this is one of the big, secure car parks. No discounts for disabled and attendants aren't bothered by non-disabled cars parking in the four disabled spots they do have. Poor service - shame on them.

    Thumbs Up: Warwick Castle

Again half price for both disabled and carer.

Thumbs Up: Theatre Royal/Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham

    Similar schemes to the hippodrome.

    Thumbs Up: Nottingham Arena

Offered the half price deal for comedy show and allocated seating in disabled area (my Mum could just make out shapes on stage even with 75% blindness! yay!) Downside is there is no parking near the arena!

Thumbs Down: National Indoor Arena, Birmingham

Full price for all tickets. No discounts. Disabled parking available, but not pre-bookable. Once full, that was it. Would recommend taking custom elsewhere.

    Local Thumbs Up:

My Mum has spoken to a couple of local taxi firms. If she is ever stuck for whatever reason, they will pick her up and take her home for a reasonable fixed price (within 5 miles) and help her in/out of her house.
This is invaluable. I would recommend anyone who still maintains any style of independance to try and sort out a similar deal. It is just such a good back up :-)
