Daughter signed up for mobile contract she cant afford!

She didn't even have a penny in her account when she went for it, and in the middle of signing the contract she had to leave the shop to borrow a pound of her friend to pay it into her account, so the salesman could sort her direct debit out.......So to me I think the contract should have been disallowed!
You might not like it, but they did nothing wrong. Shops don't operate on what is morally right or wrong (it might be a better world if they did, but that's not the point).
They followed all the rules they had to, she went in for a phone and they checked the only systems they are required to and found no reason not to give her what she'd come in for.
It isn't for them to second guess their customers.
(and I don't think you're bad parent for minute, you're doing what any parent would do)0 -
Just wondering, do the networks not have a cancellation policy? At my store, when we do contracts on mobile broadband, networks have a 3/14/28 day cancellation policy, to take into account things like not receiving adequate signal. Might be worth checking through the paperwork.
(Sorry if someone else has suggested it, there was a lot of waffle to get through!)Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

i dont think its about being a bad parent because youre worried about your daughters phone bill its jsut that if you bail her out she wont ever learn will she
my sister was always given money on a whim bailed out of any bill she ran up i tried telling my parents they were setting her up for a fall-things only changed after my mum passed away sadly my dad started to see what i was talking about and stopped paying thing for her she had to learn the hard way
its not the shops fault sorry but what can they do when an 18 year old walks in and passes a credit check? its the same as anyone else asking for a contract they cant know exactly everything about everyones financial situation can they?
btw does your daughter know what she has gotten into and has asked for help or is she prepared to pay for it?What goes around-comes around0 -
Durhamgill wrote: »Well if they checked in the first place that people had the means to pay, there wouldn't be that problem, would there!!!!!!!!!!
And again, they're not required to. Would you want someone in a phone shop (or any other) to be able to see your bank information?
That's what credit checks are for, to reduce the details that third party's can see.0 -

who are they to say I have or dont have means to pay?
I have 3 mobile contracts in my name
I dont use them all though as i control the contracts for my partner and a friend(long story)
so on paper i cant really afford those 3 contracts (over £150 a month) but i service them
sometimes on getting new contracts i could have 4 or 5 contracts with the changeover points (dont always upgrade) so it suits me to be able to do that
so the 'problem' is self control and personal responsibility.
you seem to think an 18 year old should be coddled through the simple stuff in life.
theres not much to a phone contract. it costs £X a month, meaning you have to pay £X a month
by the way this ! works just as well as !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this
except one doesnt look like a 12 year old is typing0 -
