I think most 18 year olds know how much £30 is, and if they have it spare every month to pay their phone contract.

Sorry if I'm just vouching for myself.

Did she used to pay her payg phone, assuming she had one before?
Perhaps save 30/4= £7.50 p/w when she goes back to college? But surely she can get some summer work?

Baby sitting, gardening, Ironing for neigbours type thing or actually a job?

Maybe try the compass group, they do catering work all over the country so I expect they're where you are.

If it is Durham mabe try here http://www.help4teens.co.uk/Your-Vacancies/Latest_Vacancies.html

Connexions are really helpful for young people.

You can simply cancel the insurance and save £10 pm. I would advise to do it now, as phone insurance is usually a bit of a rip-off.

Ok £30 a month is a lot. But not the end of the world, and yes a good lesson..............

This is a huge part of the problem.
They are not adults at 18.
    They are still getting there.
I'm not gonna waste time with the philosphy of it but we need to put the age of majority back to 21; it's as simple as that.
Of course we ALL have to take responsibility for our own actions but it was US, the existing adults who lowered the age of responsibility and it was after all just a cynical ploy by Government who thought a lot of the 18 - 21 year olds could swing the vote their way if 'sucked up' to.
I feel sorry for what 18 year old's have to cope with on the grounds "well they're adults". Poppycock.

Why shouldn't I be able to get a phone contract because 'some people's' children can't afford it?
I have a job and don't live with my parents, payg would cost me a lot more. I've never missed a bill payment.

Do you think I shouldn't have one?

When I was 18, the first week I went and got a contract. I had 2 partime jobs. Since then (I am now 21, almost 22) I have not had one unpaid payment.

    I now have 2 credit cards; £500 basic one, £1100 0% one.

    My credit rating is excellant.

I also have just under £20k in savings and have been saving since 19!

So, we aren't adults when we are 18?

Anyone who CAN afford one should be able to get one - age is no barrier here, just the ability to actually afford it.

yes Lynsey, we're living in Durham now, Id be grateful for the link please.

I'm at work all weekend, so will contact 02 on Monday, to see if they can do anything.
If they cant do anything, then tough! she's gonna have to pay it her self, I'm just worried that if she doesn't pay it, will mine and my husbands credit rating also be affected and will our house be blacklisted.

    :(

It won't effect your or your husband. Its done by names and address's.

Unless you have the same name as your daughter it shouldn't matter.

If you go to the shop you're effectively making a declaration you can?

You don't go to buy shoes and take them to the cash desk if you know you can't?

A phone shop do credit checks, as long as nothing adverse shows up, ou're fine. Most 18 year olds get approved, they've had no time to build up a credit rating.

Seems simple-she gets a job-in fact I'm wondering why she doesn't already have one. Most teenagers at college who want to buy stuff for themselves rather than ask Mummy and Daddy for every penny do.

If she's never been taught up to now about financial consequences well better late than never. This is a good time to start. I really hope you'll help her find a way to pay it but not just bail her out. She's legally an adult now and really needs to learn how the world works with regards to finance.

    OMG

I left home at 16 and joined the Royal Navy as do many other youngsters and then go on to fight for this country before they are 18

Your post is very patronising especially to all the youngsters in Afghanistan at the moment

Get a grip and cope with reality

But for the OP def cancel the insurance

The shoe sale can be cancelled - the phone can't.
I think you nailed the problem - "they've had no time to build up a credit rating.", it's just given regardless.

Anyway, I hope it gets sorted with the network, even if just reduced and no issues are built up through this.

    Bye for now.
