Completely agree that there are too many who have become "workshy" people, and who can blame them, it seems the system is set up in such a way, that its more beneficial for them to "not" work. When you compare the housing benefits, child benefit, the reduction in Council Benefits and unemployment benefits and tax credits alone might serve only to encourage them.

But there are many more people who have worked all their lives, who have always been proud to be "self" dependent, as well as a spectacular CV to go with it. To find themselves abruptly "unemployed", scrounging off the system to provide for their family can feel truly degrading, compounded with problem of finding any vacancies, or the mere chance of getting an interview.

Not everyone is scrounging from the system, but admittedly there are a lot who seem to be, we have to be careful not to tar everyone with the same brush. ;)

As to the Ops position, for £700 a week................

    Hi All,

I just wondered whether some unemployed people actually want to work? I've recently been looking for specific tradesmen (or women) to work on short term contracts on a building site, which is the usual way of working for self employed contractors. After placing an advert on the jobcentre plus website I received about 10 applicants who were suitable via email. However, on attempting to contact them to discuss terms and start dates, 4 of them have disappeared from the face of the earth! They haven't replied to my emails or answered their phones! The ones that I did manage to communicate with suddenly became unavailable and had other jobs/work! All of these people were contacted on the day they applied, sometimes within minutes!
So, what the hell's going on? I can understand something cropping up on the odd occasion but there is a clear pattern here. I'm offering work for £500-700 per week. Surely, benefits can't be as good as that, can they? Do claimants still have to prove that they are applying for jobs? Do email applications count as proof? I wish there was something I could do to expose these time wasters - may be they would get their benefits stopped so that they got off their backsides!!!
    Anyway - rant over!

Why don't you advertise in the local paper ya tightwad?

That's a good point but.....we needed people in an area with which we were not familiar - which local paper is best for jobs, which day is the local job day etc? Also, on a Thursday we decided to get more people in, with a start on the following Monday! So, we needed a very quick response.

Plus....whenever I have advertised in a local paper (not recruitment) I've never felt that you got value for money! Also, I hate the way they create a different business theme every week or so and then play silly games trying to get you to advertise......."don't miss out - your competitors have all taken a full page!" - prats!

So let me get this right.

You won't advertise in a local paper because they are not good value for money even though you only need three or four lines which will cost you 15 to 20 quid worded something like 'buidings trades people wanted for imm. start, short term contract, excellent pay. Phone xxx'

You object to the Job Centre because the quality of applicant is so poor and they're all scroungers anyway.

Have you thought of using an agency? Oooh hang on they'll want a fee, so they'll be poor value for money even though you'll be paying people £££££££££.

It strikes me that an experienced employer in the building trade would have a pool of reliable craftsman to call upon who, even, if they weren't available for this particular job, would have contacts who could fill in at short notice to get the job up and running.

I would suggest in future that you improve your recruitment policies because you clearly don't have a clue at the moment. Employing people at 4 days notice is going to give you a lot of duds who'll just take the proverbial.

I had to claim Jobseekers Allowance a few years ago, after losing my job. You know what, it was the best 4 months of my life. I really wish I could quit my job tomorrow and go back to living on 50 quid a week again.

"Benefits in this country must be scrapped to the bare minimum."

They pretty much are. I was on the dole in 2008 - I got £60 per week JSA and £450 housing benefit to cover my rent of £510 a month, bills, food, and travel to interviews as it wasn't paid by the jobcentre within the M25 (£5-£8 per day). Anyone who feels they should be cut should try living on unemployment or incapacity benefits for three months and see how happy they are.

Same here, I love living off £50 a week. It's amazing.

Being turned down for jobs left, right and centre. Not hearing from anyone, being told 'we really like you, we just need to check with our manager' and then never hearing again.

Yep I love the pit of depression feeling that I'm a waste of space!

How does the OP know these people were claiming and not just using the directgov website to look for more work?
If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

He doesnt... just another who has probably jumped the gun and thinks everyone who is looking for work must be on the dole.
