Driver8 has got it spot on! It is well recognised that the benefits system is abused by the scroungers. Something must be done to force, not encourage, people to contribute to society like the rest of us. Just look at today's announcement about capping housing benefit at £400 per week. Why the hell are we paying £1600+ per month to one family just for housing? Add to that everything else they can get their hands on and reductions on council tax etc - no wonder they don't want to work when it is all on a plate for them!
The system should be there to support those who need it not those who know how to play the system.0 -
It was thatcher in the first place that bought in the benefits system. Yes it is abused by scroungers, But from front line experience scroungers are greatly in the minority yet the tories paint a picture that the benefits system is full of them.
Benefits are there too support people when out of work not for people to live off, i agree with pushing people into work but not forcing to people into any job going...... I would not tell someone with a masters degree to apply for a McDonalds job.
How many people do you think get £1600 a month in housing benefits, i would wager about 5. Funny that osbourne wouldnt disclose the amount of families that do, and those families are most likely in london and how long have the claimed housing benefit for, something osbourne didn't disclose again.......he turned working people on the non working.
Conservative have also done a good job of deflecting blame for the recession from the banks and onto the public services, making out the public service is the reason recession happened. All this about civil servants get paid more than the PM, the jobs they do would see them earning £1 million+ a year in the private sector.11K Challenge

Yeah, it's not luxury. If you can live in luxury on £60 a week, let me know.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Don't know why this is turning into a party political broadcast for any particular party? Irrespective of where it started, the system has inherent flaws that need radical change. Whilst people are given more (or the same) money than they can earn they will never drop the benefits to take a job. I agree that people should be guided towards positions to their education and experience but the most important thing is for those people to be earning for themselves. Most people don't 'love' their jobs, they do them because they have to.
My point about the housing benefit is that it's maximum is ludicrous, irrespective of the location. It's all to easy to stay at home when everything is paid for.0 -

That is, without doubt, the biggest load of codswallop i have ever seen written.
you are like on of the many thick people still blaming Margaret Thatcher for all today's ill's. you literally typify the loony left.
"the jobs they do would see them earning £1 million+ a year in the private sector".
They, the average council so called Executive would not last five minutes in the private sector, fact.
Scrap the benefits for the workshy.0 -

I'm not having a pop at everyone - I imagine there must be lots of genuine claimants and it must be a struggle. My post was regarding qualified tradesmen who applied for work - when the work is offered they disappear - no email response, no phone response. nothing! I used to employ people in a different type of business and we had completely unsuitable people applying for advertised jobs, just because they had to, I wondered whether I am seeing the same thing now with tradesmen?0 -
Sorrry OP but it works both ways . My son has applied for dozens of jobs by e mail . 90% of them go without even a " thanks but no thanks "
He was made redundant at christmas , but not claiming any benefits . All he wants is some steady work0 -
People in this country have been bred by the lazy to be lazy.

I don't see how this is the same. I need people with specific skills - they apply - I offer them work - they can't be contacted. I'm sure if your son was offered work, he would jump at it. I can't understand why people apply if they don't really want the work other than to keep their benefits.
As an aside, I always reply to an applicant - suitable or not. I little bit of courtesy costs nothing!0
