The lowest form of wit is saying sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

I've given you a suggestion. A possibility why your netbook can see the wireless network, but can't connect to it even though you're using the right password.

To my knowledge you haven't mentioned your router model, so you'll have to work this bit out for yourself, but you want to go into the router settings and see if you're using mac address filtering for connecting via wireless.

The router model is Netgear Wireless ADSL2 Modem Router DG834G v4.
No i'm not using mac addres filtering for connecting wireless.

He, and others, have already done that. Wireless problems can be particularily difficult to diagnose and fix.

Please confirm exactly what machine you have and the precise version of Ubuntu installed on it. Also, does a wired connection work?

The machine is a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Model PP19S.
The Ubuntu Version is 8.04 LTS Mini Standard Edition (As per leaving the factory).
Yes it does work with a wired connection.

    Read, learn and inwardly digest...

Post 2 for the forum warriors out there :-)

Otherwise switch distro. Linux Mint could be good! It's based off Debian!

Read it, learnt it and digested it, now brought it up again as
none of that tells me anything i have not tried already.....

Yes it does work with a wired connection.

Your reinstall of Ubuntu may not have included the drivers for the wireless cards so you'll need to download them with the package manager. If it is a Broadcom chipset the bcmwl-kernel-source package looks like the one to get.

    Can I get this straight
there's been so many suggestions and assumptions it's best to start from step 1
Does the laptop see the wireless network as available?
When you try to connect does it fail?

If yes then can you go into the settings of the Wireless Router and go to the "Wireless Settings" and see what the settings are:
(These might be slightly different since i've the DG834GT version of the router (custom Firmware)

    Name:
Region: make sure this is set to "Europe"
    Channel: set this to "6"
Mode: Set to Auto (might be "Auto108Mbps" or something like that)

Make sure "Enable Wireless Access Point" & "Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID) " are ticked
Make sure " Wireless Isolation " is NOT ticked

    Change the security to "none"
Apply the settings then wait a few seconds (You may have to take the power cable out wait 10 seconds and plug it back in) and try to connect.

If it works then it's a problem with the Security settings (there's a slight problem with the version of WPA some of the routers use.)
If it does not work then their might be a bigger problem.

    Let me know the result.

All the settings are as you described, now yesterday it connected for about 1/2 an hour the connection was very slow and that was with the security on, but after that it stopped connecting again.
I have now tried this morning with the security off and on still no connection..!!!

ok Go in to Terminal (Applications / Accessories)
type in "lspci" and press enter.
Look for "Network Controller" and let me know what it says
    it should look something like:
    10:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

    you've got a Broadcom BCM4322 Wireless card
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)

OK now we need to make sure you've got the correct drivers.

Go into "system", "Administration" then "Synaptic Package Manager"
in the "Quick Search" box type in "Broadcom"

    You should get 6 items:
    *bcmwl-kernel-source
    *broadcom-sta-common
    *broadcom-sta-source
    b43-fwcutter
    bcm5700-source
    bcmwl-modaliases

Make sure the 3 with the (*) are installed, and the other 3 are not installed.
If they are installed, right click on the bottom 3 and select "Marked for Complete removal"

Apply the upgrade & when it's finished reboot and see if their is any difference in the wireless.
