I have given up trying to get wireless to work on Ubuntu, having been unsuccessful with each new release over the last 2-3 years. Either it works straight out of the box, or you have an almost endless search round the forums and newsgroups, trying to find someone with the same wireless card who knows which arcane and magic sudo apt-get command and/or configuration editing is required. Often there is no answer.
But something as mainstream (!) as a Dell Mini 10 should be comparatively easily searched for, surely?0 -
It will be because Ubuntu doesn't support the WiFi card. You can spend the next year hunting down instructions and drivers and trying to get it to work or alternately find out which cards are currently supported , get one off eBay for about £5 , and swap it out with the one in the netbook.0

Yeah, you're better buying the card to match the distro really. There are a few chipsets that are really well supported, and they're not expensive cards to buy. Atheros chipsets are usually a good bet, as are most Ralink ones. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

This is a known issue with ubuntu and certain wifi cards especially in laptops.
The best place to look for info and/or post a quert is the ubuntu support forum on the ubuntu website.
Chances are, your problem will already have been discussed.
All the gurus hang out on there.
I had the same issue with my Tosh lappy and sorted it having read the forum.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
The other option is using the windows driver with ndiswrapper.
That is what I had to do with this laptop, and it works very well.
Again, can be a pain to get set up, but there are probably people on the forums who have already been there.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I had similar problems. But it was my fault. When prompted, I'd been entering the key printed on the back of the router into "network connections". But that wasn't what Ubuntu wanted, it wanted the key stored inside the router ... which was totally different. A kind soul on the Talk Talk forums gave me the admin address thingy for the router, then showed me how to obtain the routers own key.
I entered that key ... and Ubuntu connected wirelessly, first time, with no problems since.
I don't know if that helps in anyway at all.I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0 -
Or chuck off Ubuntu and install XP or even mini XP.0

I've a feeling this is going to end badly, but what is mini XP?They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Stripped down version of XP, basically has just what it needs.
We use it on our Presentation screens at work which have something silly like 2gb storage iirc.0
