If Dell have used one of the wireless cards (Broadcom etc...) that work better with the proprietary drivers, then you may be able to install/activate them from System > Administration > Hardware Drivers menu.

I had to do that to get the wireless working on a Inspiron 1525 a little while ago.

The crazy thing is when i bought this web book from dell it had a small version of Ubuntu on it, which basically was c**p so i upgraded, which was the start of my problems as the wifi did not work, now i have upgraded to the very latest version of ubuntu and it still does not work, so i ask myself what is different to the original version to the brand new updated version.
Plus if you cannot upgrade ubuntu what is the point !!!!
The thing is i am not techie minded, but have followed all the instruction and tips people have given me but with no avail.

There must be someone out there that knows the answer !!!

What is the "small version" of Ubuntu? Do you mean the "Netbook Remix"? I never looked at it, so what's is wrong with it? It's optimized for netbooks and it seemed to have worked. I'm sure, whatever you were missing you could haveinstalled. No need to re-install the whole thing.

I'm just installing it in a VM to see what the fuzz is all about... ;)

@ OP Have you tried the methods suggested in the link in my earlier post? If these do not work I suggest that you try posting on the Ubuntu forums - if there is an answer to the issue that is where it will be. Remember that Ubuntu is not a traditional OS "product" in the sense that XP, Vista or W7 are but is the result of a huge collaborative operation. I understand the frustration - having suffered it myself - but when you consider the stability, quality and variety available to you as a Linux user Windows does tend to pale into the distance. When you then add the constant worry of picking up a virus or trojan - regardless of how careful you were - on a Windows machine then Linux does provide peace of mind. Like I said before persevere I'm sure it will pay off.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

Yes i have tried looking through your link but nothing worked, I have also posted a post on the Ubuntu forum and at the moment no one has come up with an answer, that's what makes me think there must be a fault in 10.04...
Any other ideas will be gratefully appreciated.

but did the wifi work on the original install ?? If so, someone (prob dell) had done the work for you to enable the drivers to drive your wifi card !!!

AS mentioned above, the lack of hardware support makes Linux generally not a really viable alternative to windows for the mass market.

Looking at your thread on ubuntuforums, you have the identical wireless card to one of my laptops.

That is running 10.04 with the wireless working just fine.

@ OP. I'm not sure where or what you searched in UbuntuForums. However. The most common chipset for your WiFi is the Broadcom 4322. When I searched "broadcom 4322 chipset ubuntu 10.04" several solutions were offered including the ndiswrapper route using a proprietary Windows driver which seems to work well. One of the other issues seems to be a peculiarity of Dell that the BIOS may have reset and deactivated your WiFi. Have you checked to ensure it has been activated? If the netbook came loaded with the Dell cutdown version of Netbook Remix Linux then I'd find it very odd that the WiFi didn't work from the outset. If you click on System => Preferences => Network Connections does "Wireless" appear as a tab? If not then the WiFi may well be disabled in BIOS and you will need to boot into BIOS to enable it.
