Ubuntu 10.04 Not Working On Wireless Virgin Broadband

@ OP. I'm not sure where or what you searched in UbuntuForums. However. The most common chipset for your WiFi is the Broadcom 4322. When I searched "broadcom 4322 chipset ubuntu 10.04" several solutions were offered including the ndiswrapper route using a proprietary Windows driver which seems to work well. One of the other issues seems to be a peculiarity of Dell that the BIOS may have reset and deactivated your WiFi. Have you checked to ensure it has been activated? If the netbook came loaded with the Dell cutdown version of Netbook Remix Linux then I'd find it very odd that the WiFi didn't work from the outset. If you click on System => Preferences => Network Connections does "Wireless" appear as a tab? If not then the WiFi may well be disabled in BIOS and you will need to boot into BIOS to enable it.
Yes the wireless tab is there, it just will not connect.....:mad:0 -
Which version of the Dell Mini are you using? Given that all versions bar one are independently reported as having fully functional WiFi using 10.04 and the exception has a successful solution offered its seems strange that yours does not want to play. Have you tried the solutions suggested in my earliest thread.
If so, can you confirm that the Netbook Remix you had was installed by Dell? If so then they must have a solution to the chipset problem - if that actually is what the problem is. If that was working - albeit in a different flavour of Linux - then there is little reason why it shouldn't work with Ubuntu 10.04. That "driver" should be available from Dell either on the install disc or via a download.
If all of this has failed have you actually tried the suggested solutions based on the search I tried? There is reported success with all these and there are a variety of solutions to chose from.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

First things first, "it just will not connect" is a big vague.
What does the error message actually say? Do you get as far as attempting to connect? Can it at least see the network? Might not be able to connect, but can it see any wireless networks at all?
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Ok when i bought the Dell inspiron mini 10 it came already loaded with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS which i have the original cd for.
The wireless worked then.
Then i updated to Ubuntu nebook remix 9.04 from a memory stick, then the wireless stopped working.
I then decided to update to 10.04 to see if that would solve the issue but it has not.
So do i really need to go back to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the recovery disc, (the only problem being i dont have an external cd drive) .... oh dear what a mess.
Also weegie. geek it recognises the wireless networks but the little curser just spins, it asks for a password which i put in then eventually just comes up withh wireless connection diconnected......0 -
Anyone any other ideas................0

And people wonder why more people don't use Linux whilst proclaiming how it 'just works'. Not a dig at anyone in this thread.
Linux will NEVER be a serious alternative to the average PC user when there are problems like this in a major Linux distribution.
PCLinuxOS has had a full set of commercial WiFi drivers built-in since the 2009 release.
I have installed this on 30-odd note/netbooks from a whole variety of makers and have never failed to get the wireless card working in less then 2 minutes.
This distro is designed to be the ultimate in user-friendliness, and speaking as someone with 15 years exp. on Linux, I can say that it is way ahead of ubuntu in every aspect.Never Knowingly Understood.

As much as I'm personally inclined to agree, this is about as helpful as the posts that pop up in requests for help in Windows or Mac OS forums that claim the answer to everything is "install Linux".
And in case you're wondering that's not really very helpful at all.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Anyone any other ideas, the damn thing is still not working .....0
