  • He should be ok as every where seems to be short of builders, what area are you in?
Its a shock, I wouldn't let him sign anything until he knows what his situation is. If I was him I would look for another job and not be fobbed off with becoming self employed for this person.,If he's got work for him as self employed why is he laying him off?
Good luck, hope it all works out!
  • Hi there,

I was made redundant after 8 years, I was entitled to 8 weeks redundancy pay for each year I worked and 8 weeks (paid) notice, from what I remember he wouyld be entitled to a weeks pay & a weeks notice for each year he worked up to a maximum of 12 weeks (for the notice)

Hope this is of some help.

  • Hi second chance, I know it's your name but I reckon it's your husband who will be getting the "second chance" - he will probably do far better working for himself than the crook he was working for. Hope it all works out.

    Hi

What an awful thing to happen - first thing's first I think you need a hug:grouphug:
I think the way your OH has been treated is terrible:mad: Trying to look forward though, can he sign up with an employment agency? I have been made redundant more than once and have always managed to find work quite quickly through an agency. Might not be the best long-term solution (it's one of the main reasons I am a DFW!) but it keeps the wolves from the door in the short term.

    good luck!

Wow, that's great! Just as long as the new job is a bit better organised and he gets a contract this time! :) If he does get a new job it doesn't mean he's not entitled to redundancy from the last one - make sure you look into that cos it sounds like a totally fair compensation for having worked for this dodgy person!

Just thought, if you recently got a mortgage did you take out Mortgage Protection?

If you did then you may be able to claim (after a few weeks) for your mortgage interest to be paid - but ONLY if your OH is made redundant I think! If he signs forms to become self-employed then there is no redundancy, AND there may still be no work for him either!

Show him this whole thread. I know sometimes my OH needs to hear advice from another source (not just me) and often men like to keep things simple. BUT don't let him sign those forms, this is important, it may make things more messy but you need to protect yourselves financially!

Please ask him to talk to CAB or ACAS and just say 'no, I need to find out what benefits I'm entitled to first' if the boss pressurises him tomorrow!

Indeed. The firm I was working for went into administration and so I was taken on by the firm where I was working under contract. I finished with my old boss on the friday and started with my new one on the monday with better pay and doing exactly the same job. I also had £3500 redundancy too!

I spent about £2500 on gambling, fast women, drugs and liquor and the rest I just squandered!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
