Not sure about out and out grants, leave it with me and I can check it out. But in prep for that, if your hubby has himself a good memory of clients etc, then he is halfway there together with a good business plan and forecast he could walk into a bank no probs, even better if some of those clients had some firm orders so it becomes an advance to set up as opposed to a loan and if its a route you go down go the DTi route which takes 75% of the risk, so your risk is only 25% of the relative amount to setup.

Sounds confusing but it is quite easy and happy to help if need be, but first and foremost would need to be something that your hubby and yourself want to do as it is easy for me to say go for it. Will try and get some further details for grants etc.
great thanks very much he has always been interested in starting own buisness but just doesnt know where to start and we havent got the capital i presume u need to start....hes hardworking so am sure he would do well

I think his employer is trying to get him to go down the self employed route so he can use him "as and when" the work comes in thus avoiding redundancy. What are these forms his employer is asking him to sign, what is the form no.? Has his employer given him anything in writing? I would get him to phone ACAS this afternoon and someone will speak to him regarding his situation.
yes i think that probably is the plan, nothing in writing were both a bit confused to be honest as too whats going on...i presume if he doesnt fill in these forms then we will have a case for redundancy claim?? not sure what form nos are but i know he needs passport pics to complete them

He'll do even better if he not only does joinery work but handyman work also. A lot of people have lots of small jobs around the house which specialists don't want to do as they are, well, too small. This hopefully could be a blessing in disguise.

Hi second chance - I just wanted to send you some (((hugs))) and say how sorry I am to hear about your situation. Your hubby's boss sounds as though he's trying to wriggle out of paying, good on you (and everyone here) for being sceptical of his motives!

I hope the advice your hubby receives is helpful and that he is due some payment for all his years of loyalty.

Who knows, perhaps this will turn out to be just the push he needed to get his own company started. It never feels good when something like this is upon you but things often happen for a reason and I really hope some good will come from it :)

    Good luck!

Sounds to me like CIS forms. Do not sign anything until you have spoken to either ACAS or CAB. Did he receive payslips and if not how was he paid?
  • paid weekly into bank no official payslip just an envelope with an unofficial bonus in - all info ie national ins etc written on envelope but envelopes not kept!!

Sounds dodgy when you talk about an unofficial bonus. Has he received a form P60 from his employer each year. This gives details of his pay, tax, nic etc. for the tax year.

Sorry duplicate posts. If you have P60s great. Time for redundancy pay I think. Rough calculation as he's 32 he'll get 1 weeks pay for each year worked and I think the maximum per week is around £280.00. Go onto ACAS website there is a redundancy calculator there.
