i wonder wether the other guy actually said it or maybe his wife was getting a sly dig in as she felt embarressed that she hadn't taken anything!

I'd have been delighted with the flowers from your garden. I've also been given home-grown tomatoes, freshly dug carrots and lovely little sweetheart cabbages from friends/family visiting and though they were all absolutely lovely gifts. Great for the kids to be served "a bit of Pete's cabbage" or "Uncle Don's tomatoes" with the next day's dinner and enjoy flowers from a friend's garden.

I'm another who thinks it was a lovely gift, home grown flowers, a thoughtful thing to do, you have grown them, looked after them, and picked them to give to someone - nowt better than that IMO, a lovely personal gesture.

When we visit friends and they us, we often bring and are given home grown produce which we love.

I can only think that they are jealous! You didn't commit a faux pas, I think you are the one with "good breeding" as my old mum used to say.

I think this demonstrates not that you made a mistake, but that they have bought so completely into our consumer culture that they can't see what gift giving is really about. After all, there are no adverts telling them that fresh flowers from the garden are a good gift.

    I'd agree with that.

Nowm anyone have any sweetpeas for me? :D

Last weekend we went to a friend's house for a barbecue. There was a group of three ladies, their husbands and all our children there and we all know each other quite well.

Anyway, I took along a bottle of white wine and a bunch of roses that I'd picked from my garden. Both my husband and one of the other lady's husband thought this was a very strange thing to do and thought it would have been better to have bought flowers. They thought it looked a bit 'cheap' getting them from your own garden. They were beautiful full blooms, not tatty brown ones or anything!

I just wondered if I made a faux pas or if you would agree that homegrown flowers are a nicer gift than bought ones?

OHhhh! Cabbage Roses and Peonies, short lived in a vase but lovely and a few Sweet Peas, urhm!.

When I read that Elton John spent many thousands from his millions on fresh flowers, I thought, yeah that would be me on a lesser scale.

I have put as an expense on my divorce forms at court. Lilies @£12.99 every 10 days.

    We shall see.

I/we (me and my kids) quite often give out fresh eggs, lettuce, carrots and whatever else we are growing. His teacher appreciates it, my friends say they like it -or so they say

I wouldn't say no to fresh roses-the flowers I saw in tesco today were rubbish-so I didn't buy any.

What a pair of miseries, chimpfing about your gift. I bloody hate it when folks pee on my bonfire so feel sorry for you. Your gift was thoughtful and most appropriate. I feel cross on your behalf here :D

I think it's definitely a man thing. I know I'm generalising here but your average man wouldn't think to take anything at all and if they even noticed there were flowers in the garden I doubt very much it would enter their head that they can actually be picked. They probably think they can only be bought.
    The ladies obviously appreciated them.
