Was my gift a strange one?

its a symptom of this culture that everything must have a monetary value. when you think about it we put a value on houses, cars, marraiges (and before you all say we dont - may I just say, divorce settlements), even lives (compensation or insurance)! so now its official - flowers too have a monetary value only if they come from a florist. (I wonder how much a florist would pay for garden grown roses??? - any florists on here?)0

what a nice gesture - you took along wine, which anyone can do, but you also took your own time to pick some lovely flowers as a thank you for being invited to the BBQ - you're a lovely friend, the men should ask YOUR advice next time they need to buy their wife a nice present.:TMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I think taking your own flowers is wonderful. I hope the recipient was grateful.
When I was a child, and lived in a flat, we didn't have our own garden, so for mothers' day, I used to pick a couple of flowers out of each of our neighbours gardens - they probably knew, but never told me off.
My mum remembers it with such fondness, short stems, long stems, bits of grass etc, obviously pinched, but with the right intentions!
I now love to receive "picked" flowers rather than a commercialised bunch with plastic and chemicals!
In fact, at a recent family funeral, 50% of our family took home grown bunches - and it looked fabulous and much more personal.
Good for you op; ignore those that don't appreciate you xI'm a bit of a nutter :j0 -
I would love to receive home grown flowers, much better than shop ones!

I would find home grown roses much nicer than a shop bought bunch, they would smell nicer and much more thoughtful, how ungrateful were the comments!
I'd keep them for myself next time if visiting the same friends..0 -
Well my hubby had said it to me when we were in the car on the way and he meant it. The other bloke didn't say anything to my face but his wife, my friend, told me he'd made a comment to her saying "What was that about? Picked from the garden?!"
Errrr, did hubby have a better idea as a gift?, did he actually put his thinking cap on and suggest something?, and as for the other husband, what an insensitive git.
You could have just brought the wine, but no, you thought you would add a nice touch by bringing your own flowers, being a female you knew the other lady would appreciate them.
No you havent made a faux pas, the men who sniggered and made the coments are the ones that have made the faux pas.0 -
What a thoughtful lady you are, perhaps the others felt bad that they hadn't taken anything along themselves.
Flowers from the garden are beautiful, can`t get better than that, I am sure your roses were really lovely, and a really special gift.0 -
No, not strange. Much better than shop-bought flowers. Tell your husband and the other bloke to frig off.0
