Do you think they might have been pulling your leg? :)

Well my hubby had said it to me when we were in the car on the way and he meant it. The other bloke didn't say anything to my face but his wife, my friend, told me he'd made a comment to her saying "What was that about? Picked from the garden?!"

I think this demonstrates not that you made a mistake, but that they have bought so completely into our consumer culture that they can't see what gift giving is really about. After all, there are no adverts telling them that fresh flowers from the garden are a good gift.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I both give flowers from the garden as gifts and gratefully receive them.

There is nothing wrong with them as a gift, its charming and thoughtful.

Homegrown flowers are beautiful. My daughter's boyfriend's Mum and Dad gave me a bunch of beautiful roses and sweetpeas from their garden. They were absolutely beautiful and smelt delightful!

I think that's a lovely gift. I would have felt really honoured that you cut roses from your own garden rather than buying them. A rare treat to have home grown these days and I guess most if they have roses in there garden like to keep them there for their own enjoyment.

I am guessing your husband only said he thought it was strange because he thought it may make you look cheap giving something you had not bought but had picked for free from your garden. Of course he is overlooking the fact there were not free as you had to buy the plant then tend to it so in fact you invested more in them than the cost of a bunch from a shop. I think women would see this where as most men (I am generalising of course) would be thinking about the cost first. I imagine the other husband just agreed with him! I would love home grown roses far more than shop bought ones!!

It would be a brave person now who put their hand up now and said it looked odd...but...I'd love home grown flowers. Not even slightly weird.

It would be interesting to me to know which part of the country you live in as my inlaws live in an area where how much you spend on things is more important than the gift itself. Makes me mad! It's all about showing off.

I too would much prefer a single home grown rose to a bunch of those awful florists roses. my family all know that I cannot stand them so i always get given chrysanths and lilies if the kids buy me flowers. at least they look and smell real!
hun, you did the right thing and the comments would have appalled miss manners or any other nicely brought up person. one NEVER makes disparaging comments like this. they were out of line and shows how badly in need of some etiquette lessons they are. you, however, obviously have good instincts and consideration for other people so dont need any lessons.

Oh - so I'm assuming that they aren't aware that flowers come from plants, which are grown in gardens across the country, the world even.

Next thing you know they will find out that potatoes are grown in cow !!!! and - well, the manure will hit the fan then, won't it?
