Was my gift a strange one?

Last weekend we went to a friend's house for a barbecue. There was a group of three ladies, their husbands and all our children there and we all know each other quite well.
Anyway, I took along a bottle of white wine and a bunch of roses that I'd picked from my garden. Both my husband and one of the other lady's husband thought this was a very strange thing to do and thought it would have been better to have bought flowers. They thought it looked a bit 'cheap' getting them from your own garden. They were beautiful full blooms, not tatty brown ones or anything!
I just wondered if I made a faux pas or if you would agree that homegrown flowers are a nicer gift than bought ones?

We are born wet, naked, and hungry. Then things get worse.

I would have been delighted to receive home-grown flowers! It's so much more personal, and a lovely gesture.
I think they all need to remove that broom from up their backsides...:rotfl:0 -
I would love some home grown flowers they are usually alot better than shop bought ones and smell alot nicer too. If they were offended by them then all i can conclude is they are a little stuck up in their way of thinking as you have taken much more time and effort in growing and caring for the flowers than walking into a shop and grabbing the first bunch of over priced rubbish they sell :-):jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0

I'd be delighted if a guest gave me flowers regardless whether they were home grown or store bought, what a nice thing to do.0

I think it was a lovely gesture. My MIL brought us some flowers from her garden a couple of visits ago and I thought they were really nice

I think It is far nicer to receive something that has had love and attention put into it rather than something bought in a hurry as a last minute thought. I would have happily received your flowers.
You need to present nicely, perhaps saying you picked them because you thought they would like or something. I love when someone makes me feel special because they have thought about what I like.0 -
Home-grown roses sound both lovely and normal - to me. It would be a bit... interesting if the wine was home-made!
I took some home-made cookies round to my neighbour, last week, when I called round for a chat/playdate. Maybe she's busy telling all her friends that I should have brought a commercial packet? lol0 -
I think your gift sounds lovely. I would much rather someone hand-picked me fresh flowers than present me with a bunch from the supermarket.
Bear in mind that some people rate everything by how much it cost. I do a lot of crafts and am bloody good at them! I have sold lots of my stuff over the years and regularly get commissions. I have noticed that some people seem to think I am just being tight when I present them with a handmade card or gift rather than a shop-bought one. I get very annoyed 'cause I never buy rubbish materials so the gift is not necessarily cheaper than a shop-bought one.0 -
UUUUHM! Typical man's response. It was simply TOO thoughtful for them to comprehend...LOL
