You need to be a UK resident and the travel must start and end in the UK to be able to use a UK insurer.

You could try www.worldnomads.com or www.worldwideinsure.com Can you not get travel insurance from a company in Luxembourg?

I am an expat living in Spain and this information is not correct- There are several UK Insurance companies who insure expats living abroad wjen they take hoidays worldwide. For the past few years we have been insued by one of them, originally recommend by this site

With hundreds of policies on view and literally weeks worth of T+C's to read the question is, how good is the cover? I went with protectyourbubble and standard cover as it's £5mil & ex. USA, but I only read the summary...
Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker

Travel is a great topic for MSE and worth expanding e.g. I book villas through 'owners direct' and every time (bar 1 which was a bit below par) has been good BUT there is a risk of arriving to find no house or an owner who never put the house on the site! So fraud (and if you want it misrepresentation insurance) would be helpful but not easy to find. (Interestingly the site has a sponsored link to one provided by Europ Assistance with the site as the agent - one 2 week trip with a travel policy for 4 (worth say £50) PLUS a maximum fraud claim of £5000, costs - wait for it - (it isn't libel to use a quote. is it?) - here we go, £700. yes that is SEVEN HUNDRED POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This implies the satisticians think one in 8 properties is a fraud - or unlike St Martin the site is a little over ambitious about its commission.
  • Does any travel insurance cover costs incurred by missed connections?
A couple of years ago I had a through ticket to Chile, connecting in Zurich. The flight from Manchester to Zurich was late, I missed the Chile flight, was put up in an hotel and flew onto Chile 24 hours later.
Altho' I contacted the airport transfer and hotel in Chile, I still had to pay, and, also missed a precious day of my trip. My insurance didn't cover these losses.
  • The MSE article suggests Direct Travel Insurance in a number of circumstances however reviewers give it a poor rating on ReviewCentre

Here is one example: Appalling service, company seems to have gone downhill since changing underwriter from AXA to AIG. [Dec 2010]
  • Potentially stupid question...

I'm travelling to China, Japan and perhaps Korea in a few months and I've looked at moneysupermarket and a few other sites for quotes, however when I select "single trip" it usually asks to select a single country. I was ready to pay for a policy with Virgin until I got to the final page where it said the only country covered was China.

As I will be visiting 2 -3 countries is this therefore not classed as a single trip and I should instead take out backpackers/annual world insurance?

I tend to find with alot of review sites that people are far more likely to leave a review if they've had bad service.

We've gone with DirectTravel this year as a couple of people we know have used them and both families have said they were pleased with the service they got when having to make a claim and would use them again.
Nothing is certain, but I'd take a personal reccomendation anyday :)

You need a policy which lets you select 'worldwide', most will, if you go direct to their own website. :)

But not as costly as travelling without the correct insurance and consequently having your claim rejected
