I think, unfortunately, that you won't be covered. The section below is the part of the policy that covers cancellation, and I've made bold the parts that mention travelling companion. Policies will only cover the specific risks mentioned in them, and sadly there is no mention that I can see of illnesses of relatives of travelling companions.

I think therefore that they would reject a claim. But it would be worth asking, in case they're prepared to be generous. Or in case I've missed something.

Good luck - please let us know how you get on. :)

Section 1 – Cancellation and Curtailment
    1. We will pay you up to £5,000 for unused travel and
    accommodation charges (including unused kennel
and cattery expenses up to £250) which are not
recoverable elsewhere and which you have paid
or contracted to pay should you have to cancel
your trip before you leave your home or place of
business as a result of the following commencing
    during the period of insurance:
    (a) Your death, injury or illness or that of your
    travelling companion
    (not including a tour
leader or someone you have paid to provide any
part of your trip), the person you are going to
stay with, a close relative or business associate.
    (b) You or your travelling companion being required by
the police to stay at home as a result of burglary,
or serious damage by fire, explosion, subsidence,
storm flooding, vandalism, fallen tree or impact by
aircraft or vehicle to your or their home or usual
place of business in the United Kingdom.

    (c) You or your travelling companion being required
for jury service or as a witness in a court of law
    in the United Kingdom.

    (d) You being made involuntarily redundant if you
are under 65 and have 2 years’ continuous
    employment with the same employer.
    (e) You or your travelling companion having agreed
leave subsequently cancelled by the emergency
services or armed forces, for operational reasons.

This cover does not apply to cancellation of leave
due to war, invasion, acts of terrorism, hostilities
(whether war be declared or not), civil unrest,
revolution, rebellion, act of foreign enemy or any
    similar event

    Hmmmmm ....
many thanks for the research on my behalf, I can see why it doesn't look good. I'll be better off if the snow strikes - but in any event, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Why not try a travel insurance comparison site, such as:

    http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/
  • If you are a flex account holder you get free travel insurance provided in the qualifying period you bank £750 a month.
due to illness during the time some of my icome came from benifits.
    NATIONWIDE WILL NOT COUNT THIS.

I can't understand that. All they say is:

To maintain your free Travel Cover, you must credit at least £750 per month into your FlexAccount (excluding internal transfers).

Nothing about the source of the £750 - unless of course it went into another account first, and then went into your FlexAccount by an internal transfer. If that was the case, it wouldn't count as part of the £750.
  • I have no idea if I am doing the right thing or even if I am in the right place but I have a question re travel insurance. I live and work in Luxembourg but cannot arrange worldwide annual travel insurance (including winter sports and diving from here. I was using a UK company for this but they refused to pay out on a theft of property from a car claim so I am reluctant to renew my policy with them. Does anyone have any ideas how I can find out about other companies willing to insure UK citizens living overseas?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

You need to be a UK resident and the travel must start and end in the UK to be able to use a UK insurer.

You could try https://www.worldnomads.com or https://www.worldwideinsure.com Can you not get travel insurance from a company in Luxembourg?
