If watching the game is so important then why isn't the school inviting the kids to watch it at school, supervised?
Why is that better than letting them leave early to get home in time? Inviting them to stay and watch it at school is great, but what makes people think that's better than letting them out early? What is the big deal about this? Seriously?

I was scribing for a boy who'd broken his arm just before his GCSE English paper last week. In it, there was an article about how children are not allowed to take risks any more. There was an observation that a group of children who had been invited to London to receive an award were not allowed to go by the school because it was deemed 'too risky' to go there.

Seriously. We have to stop treating our children like the world will fall apart if they're not sitting in a classroom.

Whilst I don't have a problem with letting the kids out early to watch the football, it's the lack of consideration towards the parents I'd be more angry about.

What about the kids who can't be picked up early because the parents are at work?
My new childminder for example wouldn't be able to pick up DS at that time because she runs a mum and tots club until 3. My OH is in another bloody country right now so he couldn't do it. I wouldn't be able to pick him up myself so what would happen then?

Oh yeah I'd HAVE to leave work early (not before getting the rollocking of my life from my ward manager).

I'd be one seriously pee'd off parent

It's a secondary school. Is it really necessary that they are picked up at that age? Surely the amount of children who need support getting home is extremely small?

And, yes I also think it is good for the schools to promote a little patriotism. Why not? How can it possibly be a bad thing. There is so much diversity in schools and communities that it is good to have something to unite us.

Because patriotism is fundamentally ridiculous? I'd prefer that schools didn't teach children an absurd, pointless and divisive concept.

Football only 'unites' football fans, and contrary to the world cup publicity, not everybody is one.

Ah I thought it was primary :o

Either way not all kids are going to be able to get home/be left at home alone. Even if it is only for half hour/hour.
Granted it may only be a few but it's still showing a huge lack of consideration for parents of those few kids.

As I mentioned in my first post, I would hope that SEN kids who can't manage alone are given adequate support. Just because school's getting out early doesn't mean that the teachers have done nothing to make sure the kids with special needs are safe.

Personally I can't see all the fuss for a group stage match. It isn't like the "nation" gets behind our sportsmen and women normally, only the football. Indeed for many sports you'd be luck to find them on TV at all even if we are well placed to win the world championships. Very sad that diversity is forgotton and sport becomes homogenised into football football and more bloody football.

If the school really are concerned about the children being able to watch this match surely the responsible thing would be to say to parents that they may collect their child by prior arrangement at 2.20pm to watch the match at home if they wish. Alternatively children may either watch the match in the hall or engage in an alternative activity until the usual home time.

It all rather sounds like the staff want to leave early to me.

Can't understand why people are so up in arms about it, its one hour, not a week or a day just one hour.
I think that is good of the school to let them go home early and see nothing wrong with it, theres plenty of more things to get het up about but one hour of a childs education isn't one of them in my view.
For me it's not so much about the hour leaving early but the reason for it. If it was something that actually mattered as a nation I would more than likely accept and agree to the leaving an hour early but this is football. It's not changing history as we know it, it's not a huuuuuuuge massive charity event that will benefit hundreds of thousands of people it is simply a football match.

I just seriously dont understand why everyone MUST like football and MUST accept it is such a big deal. Its a game nothing more.

I don't see anything wrong with it. The world cup is once every 4 years, and the occasions when matches take place during school/work time are even rarer (the next world cup is in brazil so maches will take place during the middle of the night due to the time difference). This is a one off, and I think it is a sensible response from the school who would otherwise have kids wanting to bunk off that day or try and listen to the matches by sneaking in headphones (I did this during France 98). Even worse was Japan/S Korea 2002 when I was doing A levels and had to sit a 3 hour exam during the England-Brazil game which had already started. I was dying to find out the result and it was distracting. If they had come in and written the score up on the blackboard I could have forgetten about it.
I bet none of the kids are complaining. And as for the teachers, I think it has been well established by now that teachers work very hard so I am sure they will make up the time!
finally I believe this is the only England game in the world cup that could cause any timetable clashes, so as this won't be happening again for probably 12 more years (if england win the bid for the 2018 world cup) I think people should stop complaining about kids missing 1 hour of schooling. Plus they have given at least a week and a half notice so surely that's enough time to make alternative arrangements if needed.
My work are putting TVs up and providing refreshments. It will be a nice social occasion and people who don't want to be involved don't have to be.
