Debs, the ignore function can come in very useful. ;) It means we can converse without being interrupted by people who are making rude remarks.

My children are all at secondary school and they have been told that there will be a telly set up in the pa area for anyone who wants to watch footie but they must a have permission from their parents and b) be willing to put the missed time in either via lunchtime or coming in half an hour early for a couple of days .I'm happy either way as they will run a breakfast club and a lunch club for both of these options with free breakie or lunch provided. Its only once every four years

My sons school have (for once) got it right over the world cup. They are finishing at 3 instead of 3.20 (but are not having afternoon play to make up the 20 mins) and have sent a letter home stating they are showing the match in the infant and junior school halls and each child can be accompanied by 1 adult.

We all have been asked to bring snacks and drinks for our own kids and to ensure that there is 1 adult present for each child (obv if all from same family 1 adult is ok) any children that do not want to stay can either wait in the playground til 3.20 (therefore having their pm break but at 3 instead of 2) to be collected or be collected at 3pm.

    I think this is a great idea!:T

TBH my son is a massive football fan, as are most of his mates and i doubt they would learn anything anyway being so excited for a game that starts so early, so on the day they can all go in own clothes and they are having a 'world cup day' where they will learn about customs from the participating countires and are cooking foods relevant to the country their class has chosen

IMO these two schools are getting it exactly right.

Because patriotism is fundamentally ridiculous? I'd prefer that schools didn't teach children an absurd, pointless and divisive concept.

Football only 'unites' football fans, and contrary to the world cup publicity, not everybody is one.

Does anyone really think that missing one hour of school will turn their children into unreliable irresponsible adults? Really?

No, I certainly don't - but I am taken aback that the school is closing an hour early just because of a football game. No-one in my household could give a monkeys about the game, and we won't be watching it. I really am surprised at the notion that kids wouldn't be at school anyway on that day because they'd be home watching the game with their parents. Would they really, in substantially large numbers per class, to disrupt the whole school timetable for that afternoon?

It does sound to me like its the staff who want to watch the game without interruptions, and thats why the school is closing early. Which is fair enough, but if this was proposed at my daughters school, I'd be wanting an explanation - not just "we're closing early because England is playing". What about the Rugby world cup? Olympic games? Should schools start shutting up shop early for all those events too when our countrymen are participating?

Ballet shoes, you make some good points and I was a little flippant but people seem to approve of the match being shown in school or the time being made up which is still making a special case of the World Cup. I wish schools would be more flexible myself. K.

id prefere my children to know they take time off school / work only when they desperatly need to as its important to know not just to have an hour off to watch a football event, music event , social event , all which are hobbys really ,
hobbys should be in spare time not during school time

They're not taking time off, they're being given time off, there's a world of difference.

It's teaching them that actually, it is OK to have a bit of fun in life.
