It's teaching them that actually, it is OK to have a bit of fun in life.
But presumably the children are only being given this time off because someone in authority wants to watch the match.2014 Target;

Perhaps yes.
But OP's argument is that it's setting her children a bad example for the future, making them believe it's OK to take time off school/work for mere hobbies.
But how many adults, whether they like football or not, if given the option of leaving work an hour early on Friday are going to turn around to their bosses and tell them they think it's outrageous and that they think their boss should set up a TV in work and expect them to stay later if they want to watch the match?
Life really is just too short to get so upset about missing 1 hour of school on a Friday afternoon in June, when most of the work for this year is done and dusted.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

Given the terrible spelling and grammar in some posts there are a few posters who could have done with more than an hour extra in school!
COME ON ENGLAND!It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
Think it's the right thing - they will remember the match more than the last hour of school on a Friday - teachers will probably get all the work crammed into the day anyway.0

Football only 'unites' football fans, and contrary to the world cup publicity, not everybody is one.
I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. Far from it being divisive I think it will unite them. Rather than be seen as 'second generation Irish' or 'third generation Jamaican' they can all be English.
I think some posters are being more honest than others. It seems to me it is not about missing an hour of education at all, it's about them having to leave work to collect. Why else would so many be happy to have them watch it in school but not go home?
Not every child is a footy fan, by letting them out an hour early, those who don't want to watch and support needn't. They can do some extra algebra with those Mums that fear the hour off will damage their lives irreparably.0 -
I think it's awful that schools will enforce an early closure on everyone due to whoever wants to watch the football, but if a parent puts in a holiday request form, in order to take their kids on holiday as a family, the school has the right to refuse that.
Surely all your above arguments about teaching kids that it's ok to have a little fun in life, give and take etc, would all apply to families taking an annual holiday together, yet my sister's school wouldn't authorise a week's holiday abroad for her, because it was during term time. Just term time, not exam time.
I'd be mortfied if I was a parent who worked full-time, if my children were to be sent home from school early. Guess people must have really relaxed employers!0 -
im torn with this..
it really wouldn't bother me if school shut early, if i was at work then my CM would pick up
but i do find it hypocritical.. as someone else mentioned, as soon as you ask for any time off you get the big 'education' lecture
and i do beleive if england happen to win the world cup it will change history - the morale of this country would go sky high
i also worry how many women will labour and give birth alone if england get to the final!

What if they're perfectly happy being second generation Irish or Jamaican living in England? What if they are they are both English AND another nationality? What if they aren't English at all? What if they're Scottish, Welsh, Guatemalan or Iraqi?
I disagree with teaching children to be 'proud' of something that is pure chance, like nationality. They didn't choose it, they didn't make an informed decision and come to the conclusion that it would be best to be born in England!
Does not supporting the English football team make you somehow less English anyway? They aren't elected representatives, just a group of men who happen to be good at kicking a ball around!0
